Battlesites Destroyed Overpower
I talked to my old comic shop owner the other day. He said the only reason he was able to keep the shop open as long as he did was because of Overpower. When people suddenly stopped playing Overpower that was it, he was doomed. Now, we're talking about Hemet, CA. The town that has produced a good number of inner circle players. We're talking about where Cherie Briggs used to come to learn to play. Nowadays there is no Overpower, no tournaments, no nothing. So why did everyone drop the game out here? Simple. Battlesites.
Cherie Briggs admitted that a big reason she considered giving up Overpower was because of the cumbersome nature of battlesites. She disliked having to include so many cards in her deck. In addition to that, battlesites are far too unbalanced. Most people I've talked to dislike knowing pretty much exactly what's going to happen turn to turn.
Besides. I went to a tournament in Fountain Valley, CA a few weeks ago. This is the stomping ground of Aaron Shoenke and some truly excellent players. The thing is 12 people showed up. 5 of which were from Hemet. Nearly everyone played some sort of Marauders deck with The Outback as a battlesite with Marvel Universe homebase. Since Monumental came out this is pretty much the only deck I've ever seen played competetively, with the exception of the origianl Four Freedoms Plaza decks.
Well, quite honestly I'm way beyond allowing hits against a battlesite to count for venture as a solution. I've personally decided to not play with battlesites anymore. I preferred the game how it used to be when you hung in suspense on a single card like Guardian Angel, and when Web Headed Wizard was the most powerful card in the game.
What I'd like to see, and this may seem drastic, but eliminate battlesites altogether. Instead, use locations as homebases, put them on the frontline, allow them to be k.o.'d, and let those hits count for venture. In this situation, the only card you add to your deck is the location, you get the inherent, and sure why not, you get to play with any hero specials again. That way cards like Geo Knowledge and Wakandan Technology still have a use since they affect battlesites. Basically what it comes down to, is use what we have been using as homebases as battlesites with a few changes.
