A Whole Lotta Promos
I have about had enough of the freakin promo cards in Overpower. How many times in the last year had Fleer promised us certain cards would be in the monthly venture? I have no idea but I certainly recall they promised us Holohero reprints, DC Promos, and Classic "accidental insert" cards. Of course none of us have ever seen any of them in any newsletter to this day.
Let's see...with the exception of the Classic inserts, I personally have every promo card ever made. Yet I still complain. The reason why is because I know quite a few players who didn't want to buy enough comics to get the Onslaught specials/heroes. They didn't see the point in buying eighteen boxes of Batman Hologram trading cards to get a set of holoheroes. Why should they? It's a freakin game. People just want to play the game. When you go buy a Monopoly set, they don't make you buy 100 pounds of dog food to get the hotels!
Fine. So the game is collectible. No problem. Just put all the cards in the packs, make them reasonably rare, and it's all good. I am one of the biggest customers of Overpower no question. Tracking down all the promos has pretty much disillusioned me from buying much more of this product. Now, if you want to get the cool new Any Character card from Image, you have to get yourself to Chicago for the Wizard con. Yup, you heard right. The new Any Character not available in Image packs is to be given away exclusively at that con. So how bad do you want it? Bad enough to spring for a trip to Chicago? Don't worry, they promise us it will be available as a Legion exclusive as well. Don't hold your breath folks, based on their track record, you're not going to see it.
Onslaught Missions. Now that was a cool idea sending in wrappers of IQ to get the cards. I liked that. I'd like to see more of that with the other promos. Face it. No matter how many packs of Overpower you buy, you'll never pull an Assault on Onslaught mission. You must have the missions to play the events that go with them. The events are really cool too, but I know far too many kids who don't have the missions and don't have any idea where to start looking. Funny thing is, I know two people who collected the Onslaught Ultra trading cards, comic book fans strictly mind you, who hated the fact that they got promo cards for a card game they will never play. What did they do? They threw the cards away. What a waste.
Look at Decipher for a moment. They produce the Star Wars CCG. They have out various products which contain preview or promo cards. Each product they have done this with has been 100% game related. In other words, you buy the thing, you get Star Wars game cards and not a huge mess of Marvel vs. Wildstorm trading cards. Not only that, they have given cards away for free at tournaments and cons, only to then offer them to everyone for free to anyone who mails in for them. I realize this is a blatant push for Decipher, but Marvel could really look at their example and do things right. Decipher has a completely profession attitude and a commitment to it's customers I haven't seen from any other CCG company out there.
Overpower has more promo cards than any other CCG on the market. Just look:
