Zillion: The Anime

Episode 1: Call Me J.J.

After the theme song (which is exactly the same as it is in the game but with untranslated lyrics, to my unending amusement) and a short summary of the state of events, we see J.J. riding across a desert-like wilderness on what turns out to be a bicycle. Then it cuts to the White Knights base, where Apple is training in a holographic simulation which is very similar to the motorcycle scene from Final Fantasy 7. Champ and Dave are discussing her preformance. Opa-Opa is sitting around in the background, which unfortunately is all he does on this episode. I feel I should also point out that Champ is playing with a Transformer. We then cut back to J.J., whose bike flips over after hitting this weird rabbit-like creature, which then begins to eat the bike. This leaves J.J. in a position where he can see a rocket lifting off (I feel I must mention that the animation on this event is not exactly something to brag about. The rocket shakes back and forth very noticably), heading towards the Nosa. A large number of Nosa missles suddenly strike the launch pad and the surrounding city, which among various other things, destroy the shuttle. We then see Director Gord and Amy calling the White Knights into battle. After getting a quick look at the leader of the Nosa (I know it sounds like this jumps around an awful lot, but that can be blamed on myself, it's actually much less jumpy than my description), we see a large Nosa attack force destroying the city. In this scene, we are introduced to what must be the most androginous character ever, a little kid whose age is estimated as 6 named Addie, or possibly Eddie (my friends and I are still debating over the gender here. Both the names Addie and Eddie seem to be used with equal freqency. The appearance of this kid should win an award for providing no clues as to it's gender whatsoever. Also, at least in the dubbed version, the voice of this character could fit just as easily with either gender. I'm leaning towards female though because at one point in the episode Addie (Eddie?) says quite clearly "You sure know how to show a girl a good time," I am still open to the possibility that this could be a translation error though, see the description of Apple, so I'll accept votes either way). In any case, Addie (Eddie?) recieves a blue card from a dying soldier and is attacked by a Nosa Warrior. J.J. arrives and saves Addie (Eddie?) by shooting it (in the right shoulder). The Nosa is not dead however, and attacks J.J. as soon as his back is turned. Addie (Eddie?) Returns the favor to J.J. by hitting the Nosa over the back of the head with a neraby steel girder. That's right, not only does Addie (Eddie?) have indefinable gender, (s)he also seems to have super strength. Meanwhile, Apple and Champ are given their real guns. Amy asks Director Gord what he knows about J.J., as this is apparently the first meeting of the White Knights. This short conversation tells us a lot about Amy's personality. The White Knights then get into one of an impressive collection of vehicles, this one being a large armored transport, which is then attached Gestahlt style with a large flying vehicle. It then cuts back to the Nosa destroying the city (I know it might seem that I'm being a little harsh constantly pointing these things out, but this scene features a row of Nosa Warriors shown from the waist up carrying guns. Due to the way their marching is animated, there is an overwhelming impression of a kick line here. However, the animation of Zillion is very good with the exeption of these scenes I'm pointing out. For example, right after showing the Nosa kick-line, there is a wonderfully animated series of explosions). We also see in this scene a number of non-humanoid giant robots, and, one GIANT giant robot, which is roughly the same size as the city. J.J. discovers that Addie (Eddie?) grabbed his gun (which by the way is a normal gun, not a Zillion) at one point as (s)he uses it on an attacking Nosa (right shoulder again). J.J. gets it back from her (him?) and shoots down 3 more Nosa (you guessed it, all right shoulder hits. As a matter of fact, EVERY time a gun is fired at a Nosa on this episode, it hits in the right shoulder. This is not the result of stock footage, nor is it due to a Nosa "weak point". It's just a really wierd coincidence). At this point the writers use the strange cliché of having more or less the entire army hunt down J.J. and Eddie (Addie? I used Eddie first this time because J.J. uses that pronounciation at this time). They hide on a large durable solar panel. Unfortunately the giant giant robot is sufficiently well-armed to destroy the panel. J.J. and Eddie (Addie?) escape under the cover of a sudden solar eclipse (it might just be me, but as far as I can tell, the moon on this planet is approximately the size of a house and is in a low enough orbit that if they really wanted to, J.J. and Eddie (Addie?) could probably have jumped onto it from the panel). The Nosa seem to have Infra-red sensors in the large red circles on their chests however (pretty close to their right shoulders actually), so they are still able to pursue them. J.J. and Eddie (Addie?) steal a truck in an attempt to escape, but a number of Nosa Warriors grab on (I feel I should add that the camera focuses on the right shoulder of one of these) and attack. A large canister falls off the truck at this point and explodes as it crashes into a pursuing Nosa Mech (or regular giant robot if you prefer). Apple and Champ then FINALLY show up, disembarking from their large Gestahlt like vehicle, on motorcycles which, for some reason have sidecars (the only expalantion I can think of for this is that the side cars are nessessary for transforming these motorcycles into power armor, as is indicated by the intro and by the Transformer Champ was playing with earlier). J.J. and Eddie (Addie?) jump off the truck which is apparently full of explosives, and are surrounded by the majority of the Nosa army. They are rescued by Apple in Champ in a scene which I describe as being so action packed that it more or less wasn't even animated (a common phenominon in a lot of anime) (Apple and Champ both have targeting devices which look EXACTLY like the molecular scanner from Flashback). J.J. takes Champ's Zillion and fires it (causing the same sound from the videogame, ppkcheeewwop!) at a Nosa Mech directly in front of them. The special effects sequense from this explosion lasts for exactly 15 seconds (most of which are in complete silence for dramatic effect). Champ gets the third Zillion gun from Apple, and all three start shooting Nosa left and right (yes, all in the right shoulder with that great sound affect). On close inspection, the english word "Dead" written in a computer-like font, can be seen in the lower right corner of Apple's targeting device as she destroys a Nosa Warrior. It then begins playing another song which I recognise from the video game, again with untranslated lyrics (although it does seem to have as a chorus in corrupted english "Moosh! [or possibly 'Whoosh!'] I don't stop on the way!" If that makes any sense at all to you, explain it to me, and then seek help). J.J. then destroys the giant giant robot with a single shot (did I mention how over-powered these guns are?). It then cuts to the Nosa base, where an off-screen Nosa is talking to their leader in a voice that more or less sounds like talking through a fan underwater, although it can be understood it's not worth quoting. J.J. gives the blue card (which looks like one of the I.D. Cards from the game), Addie (Eddie?) had to Apple and, without even a preview of the next episode, it's over. Which let's us here that great theme song again. Oh, and don't worry, I am 90% certain that Addie (Eddie?) the Androginous will not be seen again.
