Greenline Checnya
Keith Versey
Have you played Miranda's Greenline Chechnya from Gamefix 8? (No). It's a little cracker! 120 counters 24 by 18 hex map, 4 scenarios each of 10 turns. Units are rated for combat (attack and defence, cohesion -recovery- and movement). Turn sequence starts with a roll on the random events table. Results can range from revolt in the Caucasus (Chechen player receives all the Caucasian militia units) to media reports of atrocities by either player (you roll a die and points are added or subtracted from your political index). The political index is the key driving force in this game system. The Russian player has to offset the need to secure Chechnya with the least possible force (it costs 3 points to bring in the heavy stuff, Combined Arms, Air Assault or Air unit) or just pile in the units and smash the Chechens. With this tactic it's possible to secure all the victory point hexes on the map and still lose the game. Considering that this is a small magazine game it does give quite good replay value as to which strategy to employ for either side. I have not played Indo-Pakistan war from S&T but Chechnya appears to be a scaled down version. I'm tempted to buy Gamefix 6 with Redline Korea as it uses the same system. According to 2nd Chance Gamefix has now folded and changed to Conflict and Strategy or something similar. Now you have to cut out and paste up the counters all for the same cover price as the original Gamefix. Apparently they blew their budget on "Rebel Yell".

I've now had the opportunity to play Miranda's Redline Korea (Gamefix 6) which is virtually the same system as Chechenya although the air sequence is far more detailed. It doesn't have the same buzz for me as Chechenya but it does give good replay value as there is page full of scenario options to try out ranging from pre-emptive strike to full Chinese intervention all of which cost victory points.
