I built up a DBR Russian army having been soundly trounced by same in the past. The figures are mostly Essex but I have a few Grumpys. The Grumpys figures are very nice and mix well with Essex but they concentrate on Cossacks so there is not a full range available.
The Essex figures are nice too. They do suffer from being a mix of types from about 1500 to 1660. I bought a stack by post, looking back I would not have made quite the same figure choices for 1640s cavalry. I have to assume that many of my cavalry are feudal/noble levy scum rather than regular mounted reiters.
This excellent plastic fort is by a Russian company. It was a bit of bother to assemble but a breeze to paint as I sloshed on wood stain, job done. A stroke of luck is the 12cm wall secrtion or 3 DBR element widths | |
The Russian army benefits from PO as Gulay Gorod. In games this is best thought of as Chevaux de Frise as it is hard to move and a benefit against cavalry. It provides no defense against shooting. I have found no decent metal source so went for these mantlets by Irregular. They are sturdy and do the job. Irregular do some Chevaux de Frise but they are not their best mouldings. |
