BELL/SHINSEI INDUSTRIES VAG-37 RAFAGA

Developed in early 2046 as a replacement for the Bell AH-65 Retaliator Fast Attack Gunship. The VAG-37 designation is illusive, although it is a variable vehicle; it is not a fighter. It is in fact a tactical aircraft designed to operate in the armor hunter/killer role. The basic airframe of the VAG-37 is derived from the AH-65 to the point of the new aircraft resembling its predecessor; the only difference being the AH-65 is a rotary wing aircraft. The VAG-37 was the winner of the UN Army's Next Generation Attack Gunship competition held at the aviation school at FT Rucker, in the North American continent, in early 2044. The aircraft is a collaboration between a number of companies, with the basic airframe conversion and redesign being carried out by a joint team from Bell Aerospace and Shinsei Heavy Industries. The main armament was mostly a carryover from the AH-65, with an upgrade on the avionics and fire control system being carried out by General Dynamics. Initial prototype testing was held by a detachment from B company 2nd battalion 105th aviation regiment at Ft Ord California, which serves as the UN Army's material acquisition command, which is in charge of the evaluation and further development of new equipment coming into the force. It is, however, too early in the testing stages to see if the recommendation will be made for the prototype to be put into a limited production run, or even if funding can be appropriated from the United Nations Government since, at this time, all services are vying foe a massive upgrade to it's existing combat systems.

NOTES:

  1. Destroying the head of the VAG-37 will knock out the mecha's major sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision, thermal). Radar and communications will be unaffected.
  2. Depleting the MDC of the main body will destroy the mecha. The pilot and cockpit section/escape pod will be automatically ejected from the doomed fighter before it explodes by the mecha's main computer.
  3. Depleting the MDC of the all tail fins will, in Fighter mode, make the VAG-37 all but unfly-able.
  4. Depleting the MDC of the wings will, in Fighter mode, cause the VAG-37 to crash in a Earth-like atmosphere. Changing modes is recommended
  5. Depleting the MDC of the Micro Missile Pods, while they are loaded will completely destroy the arm the pod is attached to.
  6. The pinpoint barrier shield regenerates at a rate of 50 MDC per round. Even if completely destroyed the shield will regenerate within 2 melee rounds. The shield is usually generated on the chest of the VAG-37.

SPEEDS:

RUNNING, SOLDIER CONFIGURATION:
120 mph (192 kmph)
LEAPING, SOLDIER CONFIGURATION:
50 ft (15 m) high or 70 ft (21 m) long without thrusters.
FLYING, GERWALK/SOLDIER CONFIGURATION:
Mach One (670 mph/1072 kmph), Mach 2.0 (1340 mph/2144 kmph) using the boosters, which is the maximum speed limit in an Earth-like atmosphere. Can also hover in place indefinitely.
FLYING, FIGHTER CONFIGURATION:
Mach 3.5+ (2345 mph/3752 kmph) max speed at 10,000 meters or less above sea level. Mach 8.2+ (5494 mph/8790 kmph) max speed at 10,000-42,000 meters above sea level. Max altitude of 42,000 meters without rocket booster assistance. Maximum rate of ascent is 28,500 meters/minute. G limits are +22 to -14.5 standard Earth gravities. Cruising speed is usually Mach 2.0 (1340 mph/2144 kmph). The VAG-37 is not capable of achieving orbital velocity over an Earth-class planet without additional rocket assistance.
MAX ENGINE THRUST:
68,500 kg x2 in an atmosphere, 78,950 kg x2 in space. The maximum thrust is automatically limited in an atmosphere due to coolant problems with the optional air intake systems for the engines.

Shinnakasu Heavy Industries/P&W/Royce FF-2350B. Two 2-dimensional independant convergent/divergent exhaust nozzles for improved VSTOL performance rated at 56200kg of thrust, (62000kg in overboost) and 10000mw of generator power designed for dual atmosphere/space use with optional concealed air intakes for use in an Earth-type atmosphere. In addition, several Pratt & Whitney HMM-7 high-maneuverability vernier thrusters are mounted on the wingtips, vertical stabilizers, nose, and other key locations for added performance.
COMPATIBLE FAST PACKS:
During the development of the VAG-37, Shinsei Industries discovered that the NP-ARFB-Y1 FAST Augmentation Modules that it developed for the YF-19 could be adapted to the VAG-37 with very little modification, providing the RAFAGA with additional weapons and armor for use as the need arises.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. MAULER ROV - 45 ANTI-AIRCRAFT LASER CANNON:
The VAG-37 mounts a single laser for use in air combat skirmishes and for defensive purposes. It is mounted under the nose in fighter and gerwalk modes. In soldier mode it is mounted in the chest, and can be fired in this mode as well.

  2. HUGHES MICROMISSILE PODS (X2)
The VAG-37 has 2 four barrelled mini-missile launchers mounted on the arms of the mecha. These missile launcheres can be fired in any mode. Any type of UN Spacy mini-missiles can be used by the launchers, including the high-maneuverability mini-missiles recently developed by the UN Spacy. Armor-piercing MMs are standard issue, however.

  3. HOWARD/GENERAL DYNAMICS GU-22 GUN POD
The main weapon of the VAG-37 is the GU-22 Gun Pod produced by Howard Industries. The gun pod is mounted on a special hardpoint below the RAFAGA in fighter mode, and is hand-held in gerwalk and soldier modes. Like the original GU-1 gun pod used by the VF-1 Valkyrie, the GU-22 gun pod does NOT use clips of ammo, but instead has a large internal supply of ammo stored in the barrel of the pod. This allows the GU-22 to contain a larger supply of ammo and bypasses the need to reload while in the field. Once exhausted, the gun pod can only be reloaded by trained technicians at a supply base

  4. HOWARD PBS-03F PIN-POINT BARRIER SYSTEM:
The VAG-37 is equipped with a new mecha-scale pinpoint barrier system for defense. The system can generate a single pinpoint barrier that can be moved anywhere on the mecha and used as a shield against incoming attacks. The barrier provides 100 MDC of protection, and regenerates at a rate of 50 MDC per round when damaged. Even if destroyed by combined attacks, the shield will regenerate itself within 2 rounds. In order to use the shield, the pilot must make a successful parry roll to intercept an incoming attack.

  5. HAND TO HAND COMBAT:If necessary, the VAG-37 can engage in melee combat rather than use a weapon. The variable fighter is extremely agile and can execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches, jump kicks, leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.
