Gran Turismo

Review by: Mike

Gran Turismo, the Ultimate Driving Simulator? I'll buy that statement. Gran Turismo is an excellent game, with lots of options for car fans. I've heard many people complain about the lack of European makes (BMW, Benz, Fiat, Alfa, etc.), but any game that features my favorite type of car (Mazda RX-7) is fine with me. Basically Gran Turismo's sell point is it's 160 different cars (new and used), all of which come from Japanese , American (Chevy & Dodge), and UK (TVR & Aston Martin) companies. Plus GT is the first game I've ever seen that really lets you customize your car to the max.

 Graphics
Simply the best PlayStation graphics in my opinion. If there's one sell-point, it's the excellent graphics. The cars look fantastic. The refelctions look really realistic (especially in the Clubman, city-night, stages), and the models are exactly like the cars they are supossed to be. The graphics in this game continuously amaze me for their quality. Enough said.

 Sound
The sound is pretty good. The engines sound great, and the typical screeches, crashes, etc. all sound good too. The music is pretty good. Some of it is techno-ish, some is good. Garbage did a song track for this game. One feature I wish would've been included is an option to always play or switch to a certain song whenever, and not be subjected to the one you don't like (ala Wipeout XL, Porsche Challenge).

 Control
If I would've wrote this review a week ago, it probably would've gotten an 8 instead of a 9. That was before I got a Dual Shock controller. If you don't have one, but own this game, buy one NOW. The analog control works great, so much better than digital. Plus the 'rumbling' is pretty neat too. I really like the realism in the controls. Some people may not, and may want a game with more 'arcade' type controls, but then, that's why this is a 'simulator'.

 Challenge/Fun
This game is long and hard. The sad part is though, that many people (myself included) will start to get bored before they finish everything. I have only gotten everything that can be done with the A License, but I'm already starting to get a little bored with the game. The customization might confuse some people who are not to knowledgable with cars, but for those that do, it's the best feature of the game. This game lets you upgrade just about EVERYTHING imaginable. It's so much fun to get the car of your dreams (RX-7 for me) and do everything to it that you can never afford in real life. I really wish you could add body kits to the cars (air dams, etc). The closest thing to that is buying the racing body package. Overall this is a pretty fun game though.

Overall
If you have a PlayStation, you need to buy this game. It is an excellent job, and pleases racing fans. I think F-Zero is a little bit more fun to play, but GT is so realistic. Something I've never seen before. One thing I wish was in the game, was body damage. Like most licensed games though, the makers of the cars do not want people to see their products getting smashed up. All in all, this is my favorite racing game for the PSX (and I've played a lot).

Score:    9
