Barret is the 35 year old leader of a resistance group called AVALANCHE. He says his motive for fighting Shinra is to save the world, but that's only part of it. The real reason is revenge because the Shinra company burned down his hometown. They also shot his right arm, permantly disabling his right arm, and killed his best friend Dyne. Barret now lives with his daughter Marlene in the Sector 7 slums.
In the game, I really don't use Barret after you leave Midgar for the first time. He is a very good back row fighter due to his long range gun.{Keep that in mind when fighting the two bosses in the Shinra building. You can't attack with short range weapons}. If you decide to use Barret as one of your main battle people, He is very good at taking hits, so you might want to equip some cover Materia on him. One of his guns has a double Materia Growth rate, so that makes him an effective Materia grower. You can find Barret's level four limit break in Corel after the train incident.
