This is a quick summary of the story in case you didn't get it. First of all, Cloud never was in SOLDIER. He got his uniform and Sword from Zack, who was the real person at Nibelheim. Cloud was just an ordinary Shinra troop there and he wore a mask so Tifa wouldn't see him. During their first trip to the reactor, Sephiroth becomes suspicious aand begins to wonder if he were created like the other beings in the tubes. Sephiroth then spent his time reading the books in the Shinra Mansion and then comes to the conclusion that he is an ancient because he was created by Jenova,
who was also believed to be an ancient. Sephiroth then went insane, burned Nibelheim, and went to the reactor to take Jenova. While he is there, he runs into Tifa and he wounds her severely. Zack follows him in and tries to stop him, but is knocked aside by Sephiroth. Cloud, who followed Zack, sees Tifa and gets angry, and also hears Zack say to kill Sephiroth. He runs up behind him and stabs him in the back, but Sephiroth ignores him. Cloud follows Sephiroth out, but on the bridge inside the reactor Sephiroth turns around and stabs him. Cloud picks up Sephiroth's sword and throws him off the side, then passes out. Then later, Cloud and Zack were in the basement of the Shinra Mansion being injected with Jenova cells, but Zack breaks out and takes Cloud with him. They catch a truck to Midgar where they decide to be mercanaries to make a living. But when they get to Midgar, Zack is shot dead, which leaves Cloud alone, so he takes Zack's sword and becomes a mercanary. As for Sephiroth, the energy stream carried him to the North Crater where he would wait for the Jenova Reunion. That's what really happened at Nibelheim 5 years ago. As for Sephiroth, he wasn't just created like he thought he was. He had real parents, and they were Hojo and Lucrecia. Hojo just had Jenova Cells injected into Lucrecia's womb while she was pregnant, which is Sephiroths connection to the Jenova project. That means, Sephiroth went insane for nothing. Sephiroth is also not an ancient. This is because Jenova's not an Ancient. Jenova is the terror from the skies on the temple walls. The Cetra managed to trap it in the stratum brfore they died out, thus leaving humans the dominant species. That, is the main story line in Final Fantasy VII.
