Here's something I never thought I'd do...review an H-Game. What's an H-Game? Well...if you know, good for you, if you don't...too bad. Tokimeki Check-In! by Crowd (Not part of the popular Tokimeki Memorial series by Konami) has been translated and made available to non-Japanese speaking gamers in the U.S. by Peach Princess. I'd like to say that this game isn't as shallow as one might expect an H-Game to be...sure there's a bit of 'action' towards the end of each story, but it's never too much.
You assume the role of Takayuki Yamano, a smart, albiet lazy 21 year old guy. Due to his laziness, he's messed up his chance to get a 'higher up' job, and now runs an inn owned by his parents which he will one day inherit. Ayumi, his childhood friend who works as a maid in the inn, Ume-san, an older employee who constantly makes sure he's doing his job, and Makoto, the chef with a habit of beating up on Takayuki, also make up the group of four that runs the inn.
The characters are well drawn, and like any sort of love-sim type game, have several drawings to represent a number of emotions...like surprise, anger, shock, blushing, and what not. The ten girls are quite varied, and you'll most certainly find one that's your type. Like the cute and innocent Kumi, to the boyish and somewhat clumsy Natsuki, to the thoughtful and timid Mai. Something that sorta turns me off is that most of the girls, espcially Misato and Keiko, have real big boobs...yes I know it's an H-game, but this sort of thing might detract from your opinion of them. It's really based on your taste though.
Gameplay in these sort of games mostly consists of 'read, read, make a decision, and read more', and if you make the right decisions, you end up with one of the girls. It may sound boring, but if you're not so shallow that you can go along with this, you'll find that most, if not all the girls, have intersting stories. The stories range from amusing and humorous, to more emotional. One of the girls comes to mind, Kyoka, who's previous relationship left her a bit cold and distant. The game spans over 4 short days...not to worry, since you'll probably be playing through those 4 days several times. Dialogue and scenes may change depending on how you play as well. As for getting girls, you have to come into alot of contact with her via the decision making portions of the game, if you're good (or lucky) enough to take all the right paths. When on the right path, you of course get an H-scene every now and then...Usually 2 per girl. The H-scenes 'reward' you with 3 - 5 pictures of action, and what not, coupled with what I can only imagine was an embarassing experience for the voice actresses.
The original Japanese voice acting remains intact. Of course, the voice acting is well done, and adds alot more emotion to each conversation. Though while all the girls have voice actors, the men don't. Aside from you the only other guy, who'll be making any significant number of appearances, is Ume-san, so this isn't too bad. The music is nice, and adds to the game. It never seems out of place during a moment. While going around the inn, the music is lively and 'cute'. When it becomes apparent that you and a girl have feelings for each other, or a sad story is being told, the music becomes more mellow...etc.
Replay value is high, thanks to the 16 - 17 different endings. The game includes a very handy skip option, that lets you blaze through conversations at any time, and gets you straight to a point where you have to make a decision. Very useful if you want to start another game, and don't want to see the same scene over and over again. You can also save and load the game at any time. You get 10 save game slots, that show what's going on, and what time it was when you saved it. These, along with an repeat speech command, and a Preferences/Options menu, which is also available at the title screen, are located at the top of the dialogue box. You can also right click to eliminate the dialogue box, and get a full view of whatever's on screen.
Once you finish an H sequence, the individual pictures are added to a 'Viewing Room', while the entire scene with the voice acting is added to a 'Memory Room', both of which are accessible at the title screen. The Viewing Room also allows you to listen to the music from the game, and keeps a percentage of the H material that you've collected...Common, but nice additions to any H-Game.
Under the options/preferences menu, you are able to control such things as the rate at which text is displayed, the speed at which 'effects' are done. The only 'effect' that I've noticed is the screen whiting out btw. You can also fine tune the skip command a little, as well as choosing a very nice full screen mode, or a wondowed mode. For some reason, if you want to erase all the saved games and everything in the Memory and Viewing rooms, you can do that as well, via the Format Data command.
Before I finish, I want to point out that Peach Princess did a great job in translating this game too. Not only did they leave the references to Japanese culture and those sorts of things in there, but they also included a file that explains them. This goes from explaining why Kumi talks the way she does, as in "Kumi wants to know!" as opposed to "I want to know" and what not...to why Mai asks you to 'make a memory' with her. Many thanks to Peach Princess for not simply changing the dialogue.
Tokimeki Check-In! is probably the most enjoyable H-game I've ever had the chance of playing. Not because of the H-content, but because of the story and likable characters (seriously...). Most everything is nicely drawn, complimented by well done voice acting. All in all, there's enough 'action' to satisfy most anyone as well, if you're good enough to get to them...but don't expect a constant parade of H-scenes. You can't really ask for more gameplay-wise, and the Memory/Viewing Rooms make for excellent additions. If you enjoy playing these games at all, this one won't dissapoint.
"Do you know about the Katopirotogetoge?"
