Falling

by Bob Temple

The drug will not wear off for thirty days or more. The injection was intended to ease the wild thoughts he was having. Instead of the wild thoughts, he now feels that he is about to sink into the earth, sometimes that he is going to soar into the sky. He refuses to go outside. His wife insists that he get back to normal, to at least go out to the mailbox.
OK,he says.
He goes to the door. He turns the knob.
He swings open the door. The sky swirls down at him, the ground churns and growls like a stormy ocean. His stomach lurches.
'For Pete's sake, get the mail,' comes his wife's impatient voice. She has watched him lie around afraid to get up for two weeks. Now at last he is moving. She comes to the door. She watches him sink into the grass. He feels himself falling, falling, through layers of ground into repeating skies.
