Lena walked out of work, she was tired, her feet were aching. Another day in the life of a secretary. On her way home, she stopped off at the supermarket, only intending to buy a fresh loaf of bread. As usual, she wound up remembering a dozen things. Biscuits for the dog, razor blades for her boyfriend, something tasty for tea perhaps? She got to the frozen section in the store, and there was nothing there the freezer had broken. Oh well, looks like I’m going to have to cook then. By the time she left the store, she had 3 bags of shopping. She set off walking home, it was very windy, and she was having trouble trying to keep her balance against the wind.
She got in, and there was Rufus the dog, sitting there wagging his tail. ‘Aaahh unconditional love’ she thought. ‘I wish people were like that’. Then on second thought, she noticed that Rufus had cleverly got his lead out, and was sitting there waiting patiently for his walk. ‘Hmmm just because he wants something!’
She then braved the wind again, walking Rufus, who didn’t seem to mind the bitter cold at all, then again that wasn’t surprising considering his warm furry coat.
She got back home and prepared a pasta bake and threw it in the oven, whilst she ran a bath. She lay there in the bath feeling very sorry for herself. ‘Nobody loves me, Im bored with my job, my boyfriend hasn’t phoned, I suppose he is just going to turn up now, expecting dinner, the dog only loves me for food and walkies.’
After a while she got out, and felt a lot better after her bath, she put on her fluffy pyjamas and was in the kitchen just taking the pasta out of the oven, when… in walked Harry, the boyfriend. He was a nice guy, tall, handsome, and he said he loved her, but he was quite withdrawn, sometimes she couldn’t tell what he was thinking, whether it was her he wanted, whether he really had an idea of who she was, or even cared for that matter.
‘Do you smell my cooking??’ she asked as he went over and gave her a kiss.
He just grinned back at her.
‘Baby, you were talking in your sleep again last night’ he said.
‘Sorry, Im just so stressed out’ Lena apologised.
‘I know hon, but you mentioned something, I don’t know what on earth you were dreaming about, but this is the closest I could come up with’. He opened his briefcase and brought out a small paper bag.
‘Rainbow Drops’
‘Harry, I haven’t seen these in years!!!’
‘ I know it was quite difficult for me to find them, in the end I found them in the little shop in Crabby Lane. You kept talking about them in your sleep, so I figured they must be important to you, and after all the work you have been doing, I thought you deserved a treat, so I searched high and low for them’.
Lena then felt quite guilty, for thinking that he didn’t care about her, or her feelings.
