She stumbled over the ledge and fell.
"Nooooo!"
She couldnŽt be falling. Not now. As the ground came racing towards her, she thought about what had gotten her in this unfavorable position.
She had seen it in the paper. The headline had read: "Rainbow Drop to be displayed in Art Gallery". The Rainbow Drop. Not only was it the most expensive piece of Jewlery in the world, it was also rumored to posess magical abilities. She knew that these rumors were true. The pendant had been forged on the magical island of avalon, and it gave strength to those who possessed it. And strength was what she needed right now.
So she took a bus downtown to the Art Gallery. Mingling about with the rest of the assembled crowd, she checked the security system for weaknesses. As always, she found one. Shortly before the gallery closed, she hid inside one of the storing rooms and waited for everyone to leave. After sheŽd not heard a sound for half an hour, she crept out of the room and carefully sneaked over to the main power supply. With a quick grab, she tore the lid of the metal box. Scanning the wiring inside, she got a wire cutter out of her pocket and snipped the one supplying the alarm system. Just as sheŽd gotten the Rainbow Drop, she heard the sirens.
Oh, no, she thought, the alarms must have had a hidden power supply. As the police burst through the doors, she raced to the back of the store and up a flight of stairs. After climbing about ten storeys high, she reached the roof. But the police was right behind her.
"Freeze!" a familiar voice called. She turned around to face the woman, but at the same time slowly backed away. Then she fell over the ledge.
She turned her head to the west. Maybe...
As the last rays of the sun disappeared, her body convulsed and began to change. She screamed, first in pain, then in triumph.
"YouŽll never catch me, stupid little human!" she laughed. Then she spread her large, blue wings and effortlessly glided off into the night.
