Basically, You start with a castle and a hero, and complete a goal to win. The specific specs will depend on the map you are playing. Your goal can be total domination, find the ultimate artifact, conquer a specific hero or town, etc.
There are 6 different Castle/Town/Hero types in the game, which have different creatures associated with them. Each has different strengths. They fall into 2 main types: Spellcasters and Fighters.
There are 4 spellcaster types:
Warlock: The most powerful spellcaster with creature types Centaurs, Gargoyles, Griffins, Minitor/Minitor Kings, Hydras, and Green/Red/Black Dragons. This hero is weak early in the game and requires many resources to build up all the buildings, but the black dragons later in the game can be devestating.
Wizard: Another powerful spellcaster, creatures are: Halflings, Boars, Rocs, Iron/Steel Golems, Mage/Mage, Giant/Titan. This hero also requires a lot of resources. It is my personal favorite. A stack of Titans which throw lightning bolts can do devestating damage to your opponents.
Necromancer: A spellcaster hero with creatures: Skeletons, zombie/mutant zombie, mummy/royal mummy, lich/power lich, vampire/vampire lord, bone dragons.
Sorceror: I consider this to be the weakest hero type. It's rumored to not reappear in the next version of HOMM. It's creatures are: Sprites, Elf/Grand Elf, Druid/Greater Druid, Dwarf/Battle Dwarf, Unicorn, Fire dragons.
There are 2 'Fighter' Heroe typess:
Barbarian: Creatures are: goblins, Orcs/Orc Chiefs, Wolves, Ogres/Ogre Lords, Trolls/Battle Trolls, Cyclops.
Knights: Creatures are: peasants, Archers/Rangers,Pikemen/Veteran Pikemen, Swordsmen/Master Swordsmen, j/Champion, Paladin. This is also a weak hero type.
I like to try to build up two 'super' heroes. The first week I recruit an additional hero or two and try to explore the area around my castle as far as I can go without having a battle. Also build up your castle buildings each turn. At the beginning of the second week, I recruit more creatures and give them to one of the heroes. I pick out a group of creatures to attack based upon the reward for clearing them off the map and the strength of the creature type. If there is a particular artifact that I want or direction I want to go, I'll clear that direction first.
I'll almost always fight the creatures even if they run in order to build up experience points. This is a point I didn't always follow. I used to let them run in order to save the hassle of fighting, but my heroes did not get as strong that way. I once got a hero to level 27 when playing the 'hamburger' map from Dragonlord's web site.
A continual supply of new maps keeps this game fresh. I am working on a CD filled with maps that I have downloaded from different sites on the internet. I am going to include a readme.txt file on the CD listing the author, file name, and map name for each map, as well as the web site I got it from. If you are interested in either contributing maps or getting a copy of the finished CD, e-mail me at crissyv@eosinc.com.
Below are links to some other Heroes sites on the Net. If you would like your site included, send me an e-mail.
