The three species, the adventurous Terran, the creepy Zerg, and intelligent Protoss are all in a galactic war with each other. The Terran are trying to deal with the Zerg and the Confederates at the same time. The Zerg are trying to conquer the whole galaxy starting with the Terrans and then the Protoss. Finally, the Protoss are dealing with fending off the Zerg from their home planet and trying to help the Terrans.
In Starcraft, you can choose to be the three different species in a total of 30 different scenerios with a storyline for each. You must compete in various campagians ranging from building an establishment, conquering another establishment, trying to fend off the enemy, stealing valuable data, killing all the enemies, and more. Each species has their unique creatures, buildings, and general tendencies. There are many various heros for you to use too.
You can also play it multiplayer (1-8 Players) over the internet using Blizzard's Battle.net. That way you can compete in 2-8 player games over the internet. There are plain regular games and ladder games which are sort of like tournaments. You can chat with other people before, during or after you played a game.
There are also many various Cheat Codes that you can use in Starcraft.
Finally, create your own levels using the map editor. There are different terrains and levels of the terrain (e.g. ground level, high level, and low level). You can create different forces and unique mission oblectives and briefings. You can place all the characters and heros in the map editor and keep on creating different levels.
