De Villain Feeling the Heat
The shock news of the moment is that Father de Villain has been gaoled and accused of attempted arson following a fire at Bishop Frere Jacques' large mansion in Le Marais. Returning from evensong, the Bishop was staggered to see the widows and orphans using buckets of water to put out the flames in the wood store by the kitchens. Fortunately, no lasting damage was done but later that evening it was revealed that de Villain had been apprehended leaving the area, with storm lantern in hand, by members of the City Watch. The Minister of State will judge de Villain at a trial in the first week of the new year and any witnesses should contact the office of the Commissioner of Public Safety immediately. The stout efforts of Frere Jacques' staff ensured the mansion was ready for the Widows' and Orphans' "Peasant Aid" fund raiser at the end of the month with a slight lingering smell of smoke the only evidence of the previous week's conflagration. This news, however, seems to have been too much for Archbishop Oestminster who was taken seriously ill and appears unfit to carry on with his duties. Given that the Bishop had written asking for Pastor de Villain to be investigated only last month, it seems understandable that the Archbishop would want to remove himself from the public eye before the inevitable cries of "I told you so" (not that the Gazette would wish to be seen pre-judging this case - ed.). |

Nobs and Nobility
In His Majesty's New Year's Honours List, Colonel Jean-Pierre Brisbois and Major Julien ā Quse have both been granted the title of Viscount for their efforts in provincial and central government, respectively, with Frere Jacques receiving the deed to a country estate for his long period of service to the Church, and latterly in government as a minister without portfolio with assumed responsibility for charitable affairs. At the other end of the social spectrum, two young hopefulls have caught the eye of the Gazette after their arrival in Paris. Henri du Vrai, the first son of a wealthy gentleman, made a quiet entrance, while Pierre Robierre, a strapping merchant's son, immediately sought a commission in the Picardy Musketeers and spent most of December studying hard at the Military Academy alongside Captain Louis Mazzini of the Dragoon Guards, after sampling the delights of the Theatre Royal. |
Musketeers Glad to See Gordon Zola Go Off
Major Zola of the Cardinal's Guard managed to defeat two of his regimental enemies with the blade in quick succession before taking his battalion off to the frontier. In his encounter with Colonel Brisbois, commander of the King's Musketeers, he blocked and avoided the Colonel's initial attacks then slashed, but followed up with a poorly timed lunge allowing the Musketeer to riposte. Brisbois, however, failed to capitalise on this and was dropped by a powerful kick, whereupon he conceded. Rene Vaplus tried the same trick on Zola but failed to connect with his boot, and the gulf in expertise between the two soon became apparent as the musketeer's rapier repeatedly missed its target. He did though put up a spirited fight, striking a couple of times, and it wasn't until suffering his fifth wound that he offered his surrender. It appears that the junior officers of these regiments will be next up as de Cheval and N'Pneu are expected to cross swords soon after meeting at the theatre. |
Regimental News
Major Inzebox of the Picardy Musketeers was reprimanded at his court martial after pleading guilty to the charge of breaching military discipline. The presiding officers included Lieutenant Colonels Ferrailleur and Le Petomane, with the latter continually nodding off only to mumble "not guilty" when shaken by the clerk of the court. While they respected the Major's intentions to deploy with haste to turn back the enemy they stressed the need for the chain of command to be kept fully informed of all proposed manouevres. Jacques found his membership of Hunters suspended as a result of this embarrassing affair. In the Guards Brigade, Henri Deschamps purchased the rank of Major in the Royal Foot Guards while recent recruits to the King's Musketeers, Rene Vaplus and Queue de Cheval, both gained advancement to Subaltern. |
Suffering for his Art
Despite a lack of the usual high profile publicity, Jacque Armand Dijon's latest offering at Theatre Royal was quite a success by all counts. Attendance on the opening night was good with Louis D'Ascoyne Mazzini presenting a gift of a golden quill to Paris' favourite playwright. Regular theatre-goer Francois Ferrailleur was unable to make the opening night due to army commitments though he did take his seat in his usual box alongside April later on in the month. Alas, our (ex) arts correspondent Phil Estine is unable to bring a review of the play as he never made it out of the bar, after popping in for "a couple of cheeky ones" a few minutes before the curtain was due to go up. We do apologise to our readers and will not waste space with his critical assessment of the establishment's vegetable based beverages and salty bar snacks. |
Around and About
Lisa Bonita was lacking in festive spirit this December and showed Henri du Orleans just how fickle the fairer sex can be. As Henri faced a bit of a cash flow crisis, Lisa decided she wasn't being kept in the manner to which she was accustomed and prompltly walked out on him. Whether Eva Ready was harbouring such thoughts we will never know as Rene Vaplus made a pre-emptive strike and left her for Kristine Kochanski who came round to his way of thinking after a couple of weeks of persuasion. A similar strategy was pursued by Gestion Onyon who must feel he's moving up in the world as he took Norma to the theatre then called on a receptive Betty Bleu only a week later. |

Before the events of the fire described above, the well known members of the clergy were busy tending their flock as usual. At the beginning of the month Frere Jacques and Laura were present at St Martin's to hear Roger de Villain trumpeting the steadfast virtues of cleanliness, holiness and next-to-Godliness. Curate Farceur told his congregation of the laudable efforts of Jacques Armand Dijon in bringing the arts to the masses, while Bishop Jacques gave a sermon "It is more blessed to give a lot than a little, and don't start about that damn widow's mite!" in which Jean Claude du Lac came in for some special praise for his generous charitable contributions. |
As the first powdery snow of the Winter started to fall from the grey skies over Paris, seasoned adventurers Michel Grognard and Michel LaCroix made their way to the coast to embark on the ships making a daring voyage to the continent of Africa. While the potential gains from this venture are large this is indeed a risky venture with the everpresent dangers of heavy seas, brigands and unfriendly natives. The Gazette wishes a safe journey to all. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! |

RdV's Trial - This will take place in the first week of January and counts as a weekly action for the accused and any witnesses that choose to attend. Note that witnesses must be of equal or higher SL than the accused (SL 13 or above in this case) and that the charge is for a serious offence. For full details see section 28 of the House Rules and the Crime and Punishment Table.
A Call for Press - Things are pretty quiet on the mailing list these days with about 20% of the players responsible for 80% of the press messages. Running orders through a computer is a tedious business and the only thing that makes it worthwhile is reading what your characters have to say. This is your chance to flesh out your character and make him stand out from the crowd. While there are game events that lend themselves to comment (e.g. duels, regimental rivalries, stealing mistresses) your characters are allowed to express their opinions or observations on any aspect of Paris life, or indeed on each other. As well as the traditional letter such comment could take the form of a narrative, a letter home, war diaries while on campaign, extra details in your orders for the Gazette's stories, etc. It's your game so use your imagination and blow your own trumpet as no-one else will.
E-mail Address - My ISP has been taken over and as a result, my e-mail address has changed to dptye@attglobal.net. The old ibm.net address will continue to remain valid for months to come, however, and my alternative address remains arcadiaengarde@yahoo.com. At the moment all mail is being forwarded to the Yahoo account so please don't copy messages to both addresses.
Regimental Duties - Buried within the rules somewhere it states that it is the Battalion commander who decides whether subalterns/privates are excused duties. If your Btn CO is a PC then he has to order this; if it is an NPC you can ask to be excused in your orders. Either way, only one week of duties can be excused (i.e. a private must still do a minimum of one week per month).
Orders - Please remember to put your character initials and the game month in the subject header for your orders. Also, please try to avoid waiting for the last minute to submit orders if possible as it will minimise any delays due to queries over orders and chasing people up. Thanks.

French Letters
to KFC Buquet
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESDear Minister Buquet,
It is with great modesty and extraordinary humbleness that I accept your appointment to Minister of Charitable Affairs. As my first official act I recognize Michel LaCroix as "Benefactor to the Unfortunate". Michel has shown all Paris the meaning of the Christian virtue of charity! Furthermore, the rumors connecting Michel to pagan rituals could not be more false. I personally attended a most pleasing gathering at his estate, and found the guests to be pious and godly persons.
I hope you will approve my request to commission, from Mssr. LaCroix, a mural for the Ministry of Charitable Affairs offices. A mural entitled "Frere Jacques Ministering to the Undeserving" would do much to inspire the poor of Paris.
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
JCL Mulls
Coming out of regimental HQ Jean Claude stops and reflects. "You are indeed a figure in your new uniform Jean and, truth be told it IS nice to see the way your new mistress looks at you in it. But is a military career for you? Remember the righteous ferver that rose within you when you defended the Cardinal and the Bishops? Perhaps the church is where you belong Jean. Perhaps you should learn to preach instead of fight?" Jean chuckles to himself and fingers the hilt of his Rapier....hmmm....."Perhaps?"
Re: to KFC Buquet
Cher Frere Jacques! How about making your second act of charity a party for the common soldiers? I think we've discussed this topic before, but it's one of my favorite ones.
May God bless you!
Rene Vaplus
Private of the King's Musketeers
Advice
My dearest Bishop,Holy one I write to you for advice. I have long been a pious man and raised to revere the catholic beliefs of the church and his Majesty. I find that a ferver for the scripture burns within me. It is my desire to serve our Lord as do you but I do not know how to go about fulfilling such desires. You piety and honour are spoken of throughout Paris. Could you perhaps help guide me in that area? Your assistance would leave me in your debt. And of course lead me to make a generous donation to the widows and orphans of the church.
I am your servant.
Jean-Claude du Lac, Subaltern-27th Musketeers
Farewell!
Just a quick letter to my dear friends of Paris.I shall, once again be off on voyage. The lure of the unknown lands is too strong to contain me to the streets of Paris. The sea, the adventure. Farewell dear friends, and see you when my vessel returns.
Michel LaCroix
FJ to JCL
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESMy Dear Jean-Claude,
Your pious fevor makes me long for my own seminary days. You must make haste to the Archbishop's office and beg leave to study as a Student of Theology! Unfortunately, the Archbishops has been frowning of late on students from the peasant classes. You must present yourself in the best light. A generous gift to the unfortunate, and attendence at the Widows and Orphan's "Peasant Aid" fund raiser week four, would surely impress those popinjays at the Archbishop's. These fund raisers draw from the elite of Paris, but I'm sure a likely god-fearing lad would raise no upset.
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
The RdV Situation
FROM THE DESK OF FRERE JACQUESFather Oestminster,
Really, you must do something about RdV. I believe he must be possessed by a demon! Just now he ran by the rectory into the convent, followed by screams and a flood of indecently composed sisters. The man is wilder than a friar left overnight in the wine cellar!
His grace the Cardinal has no time to deal with the earthly affairs of the church in Paris, so we look to you to provide guidance in these matters. If RdV is more than you can handle, please step down for a priest with a firmer hand.
Go with God,
Frere Jacques
