Xenogears is definitely one of the most diverse and fun RPG that I've played since FFVII, and that's saying a lot. First off, I would like to say that it is made by Squaresoft, so you KNOW that it's gotta be a high-quality game. OK, now let's get started with this thing! First, the storyline. Xenogears is a very long, complex, and involving game because it's storyline is really in-depth. All I can say is...make SURE you know at least the most basic Freudian psychology to fully understand the game's story. If you don't or you don't feel like learning it, the game's enjoyment value is still unaffected, so don't panic! Anyway, the main character is Fei Fong Wong, a martial arts expert/artist in a small villiage called Lahan who has no memory except for the past 3 years of his life (he is 18). During this time, there is a war between two countries that has been going on for so long, everybody forgot why they were fighting in the first place! One day, a major crisis turns Fei's life around, and makes him seek him own destiny, and also answers to his past.
OK, time to evaluate this game. First, I'll say what's good about it. Xenogears is a game with the battle engine as the most outstanding aspect of the game, BY FAR. It's very innovative. For example, you use the triangle button, the X button, and the square button to unleash combo attacks, like a fighting game. Say you press triangle, then X. You would unleash a weak punch then a fierce headbutt. And later on in the game, you'll get to learn special "Deathblow" combos that are basically special "bust-up-your-enemy" moves. You really have to play it to really get the idea. Of course, Xenogears has plenty of other great stuff, like the Gears. Gears are giant robots that basically reflect the fighting style of the character. In my personal opinion, they're great, but one bad thing about them is that they're just too expensive to upgrade! It can be really frustrating. And the storyline is really great too. There are also some great minigames and side quests that can pull you into the game too, especially this "Battling" minigame! WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOO! That minigame can be a whole 'nother game by itself, it's so cool! You GOTTA play it!!!
Alright, to balance thing's out, the cons must be stated, right? Well, a few flaws are that the graphics aren't really that great. There's a lot of pixelation and breakup at times, but it's bearable. I mean, it shouldn't affect the game's fun. Also, sometimes the game can be so confusing to the point that you're wandering around for a couple of hours, but that's OK. RPG exploration is half the fun, right? And sometimes, the people just talk too much. I mean, you really get quite bored by their conversations when they're discussing a big infiltration plan or whatnot.
If this doesn't sound like an appealing game to you readers, my advice is to TRY IT. You really can't express how good any game is without playing it for yourself. And Mog says, "This is a great game that's definitely worth trying!"
