Creatures is an artificial life game, it models real biological systems inside your computer. Your creatures are called 'Norns', and they come complete with their own biochemistry, brains, digital DNA, and an environment in which to live.
The norns world is called 'Albia'. There are many different objects to be found in albia, some are dangerous, like weeds, which inflict pain and can make norns sick. But other objects, like plants and musical instruments, keep your norns healthy and amused.
Your norns aren't the only animals in albia, there are also birds, fish, flies, spiders, beetles, bees, caterpillars, bees, and nasty big green monsters called 'Grendels'. Grendels like to kick and punch your norns. They carry many dangerous diseases and can seriously damage your norns health.
