Check-Raise

Check-Raising is simple. When you have a strong hand, and you are in early position, you will check, wait for someone else to bet, then raise afterwards. Check-Raising is an important part of poker, especially Limit poker, and must be used for many purposes.

Get More Money Into the Pot

Generally, if you are Check-Raising it means you are in the lead(or believe you are in the lead). Since you are leading, you expect to win the pot, and would like as much money as possible.

Pressure Opponents

When check-raising, if someone to your right is the first bettor, you put extra pressure on the opponents to your left, by making them call two bets instead of just one, or one at a time. This might induce some of them to fold, which could very well save you the pot.

BEWARE FREE CARDS

One thing you do not want to do is give away free cards. If you are not too sure that someone will bet the hand, you might have to go ahead and bet it yourself. Giving one free card to many opponents could kill you. You don't have to worry about giving away free cards when you have a great hand, and feel you already have a lock.
