Texas Hold'em is the hottest poker game played today. It's simple appearance makes it an
attractive game to all types of people.
In the game of Texas Hold'em, before the cards are dealt, two blinds are posted. A blind is
a bet placed by a player to the left of the dealer(button) before the cards are dealt. The
player to the left of the dealer places a small blind(sometimes half of the big blind) into
the pot, and the player to his left places the big blind into the pot. When the action starts,
the player to the left of the big blind must call the big blind and the turn continues around
the table.
Texas Hold'em
1. Blinds are posted.
2. Two cards are dealt to each player, followed by a round of betting.
3. Three cards(the flop) are placed face up in the middle of the table. These are community cards shared
by all the players at the table to make their best five card hand. A round of betting follows.
4. One community card(the turn) is placed in the middle, followed by a round of betting.
5. The final community card(the river) is placed, followed by the final round of betting.
Limit Texas Hold'em
Limit Texas Hold'em is the most common form. If a game has the name "5-10 Limit Hold'em" it means that the small blind is between 2$ and 3$ and the big blind is 5$. The first round of betting ensues in increments of 5. For example, a call would be 5$, a raise would make it 10$, and so on. In general, four bets is usually the maximum amount of bets for one round. So the first round would be capped at 20$. The second round, after the flop, is also a betting round in increments of 5$. The final two betting rounds are increments of 10$.
No-Limit Texas Hold'em
No-Limit is an extremely different game than Limit Hold'em. The difference is simply that beyond the blinds, the betting is totally dictated by the players. I would not get into a game for a lot of money without a great deal of experience. That being said, there are good small No-Limit games available online.
