Shackled at a colonial whipping post, this middle-aged man suffers through
the agony of 200 lashes. For a flogging to be this severe, the man
would have had to have been charged with insurrection or rebellion.
(The whipping post in this drawing is styled after the actual post that
stood in the Kent County Jail, Dover, Delaware, USA.) Records listed
in Robert Caldwell's Red Hannah show that convicted
prisoners were whipped as recent as 1942. Caldwell's book was published
in 1947. The Encyclopedia Americana reports that the Delaware whipping
post was last used in 1952 !
