Vector originally was known as "Twilight", a professional mercenary using the latest weaponry from ASPGO corporation named Travis Drake. Personality: Drake has one. Maybe he keeps it in his foot locker. The odds of anyone ever seeing it are slim however. He is the consumate professional soldier at all times, and the butt of many a joke by comics who don't mind putting their comfort at risk. He wouldn't kill or maim someone for annoying him, but he can sure leave such persons with the notion he could. The write up is available at:the GURPSnet Characters net book if you're inclined to take a look. A convenient cosmic accident imbued Drake with the powers of his devices and blew him over six months into the future. Drake was presumed killed in action. His return was hushed up by his employers and he spent another 8 months being examined and tested. Returning to duty, he was given the new code name "Vector", a suit of armor that resembled the super suits other members of his unit were given, but without any super devices. Non-Super Equipment: Gyroc Rocket Carbine Damage Type SS ACC 1/2 dam Max Rof Shots 8d(2)* Spcl 15 7 1800 2500 10 10/10 * using ApEx rounds, other types of ammunition will have varying damage amounts.
Vector began as "Twilight" a replacement character in a near future "semi-cyberpunk" setting. The previous character, who had an autofire area effect IQ drain had been deemed too effective against the GM's villains in the first adventure of the campaign. :-o While I had a week to come up with a character, I found myself making him late Friday night. Taking a leaf from a character I'd run in another game, (see GREYFOUR) I put together a guy in armor and force powers. I finally managed to scan the drawing of Twilight I've used on his character sheet, and went to put it into a GURPS(R) Character Assistant (tm) (GCA) generated character sheet. (All rights and trademarks belong to their respective owners, Steve Jackson Games (GURPS) and Miser Software (GURPS Character Assistant) not challenge is intended by the use of these names in this article.) GCA is a superb character generation program, but it does have a few weak spots. Gadgetizing superpowers is one of them. As it stood, I'd have to get the calculator out then figure out how many points were saved making the powers into a gadget and put the amount in as a negative value under "gadget", then list the gadget limitations somewhere (likely here). Bother. More to the point, the Twilight armor was something of a fluke anyway, it had so few limitations that gadgetizing the powers only saved 21 points, while the comparative costs for the skills governing those powers between gadget and human (gadget base attribute level is 12, two skills at 16 cost 48 pts while Drake's 15 DX meant he only had to pay 12 points each or 24 pts. Which in turn meant a savings of twenty four points versus a savings of twenty one points. That's right ladies and gents: It was actually THREE POINTS CHEAPER for him to have the powers "naturally". The character concept called for a guy using devices and unable to come up with any other satisfactory limits on the gadgets, I left things as they were. With the glitch with gadgets on GCA, I figured I'd go ahead and endow him with the powers of his armor, and made a couple of other adjustments in his skills. Finally: Why the name change? 'Twilight' has little connection to the powers used (special effect is force field manipulations, the DR is forcefield, the binding is an immobile force field bubble holding the target in place, the 'Force Edge' is a concussion beam, shaped to have a cutting edge when desired, and used to propel him through the air for flight) while 'Vector' does have a tie in of sorts to the power being used. Besides, I've encountered enough other 'Twilight' supers on various web pages and figured the name was used enough as it was. ;-)
