One day in November I went to a local gem and mineral show. There were lots and lots of vendors, and I noticed that some of them were selling these trees made of slender wire and various rock chips. They were glued onto a variety of bases ranging from Ameythist to Quartz to Flourite. I thought they looked very nice, but the prices were far too steep for me to buy alot of them, so I picked up a small rose quarts tree. After studying it for a while, I decided to try to make a similar tree. Seventy trees later I decided that there was nothing I could do... it was definately a hobby.
There are a couple of shops in the area that sell my work, and if anybody is interested in perhaps special ordering a tree or two, my prices are very reasonable. The illustrations on this page are examples of some of my earlier works... my current works involve large amounts of Garnet, Mhalichite, Pyrite, Hematite, and Ameythist. My current favorite design is "The Apple Tree", which consists of Mhalichite and Garnet 'apples' on a Pyrite Base.
The following examples show the type of work I have done in the past. There are quite a few of them, I apologize if this page takes a while to load. However, I feel the wait is worth it. :-)
This was my first attempt at a tree. I made it using shells my fiancee found on Virginia Beach, along with adventurine for the leaves and a nice piece of orange calcite for the base.
This particular tree is made from Snowflake Obsidian, Aventurine, with a Morocco Calcite Base.... it went as a present to my sister as a x-mas present.
A work in progress. I'm not sure of the exact name of the stone that the base is made from, but it's the result of lightning hitting wet sand. I'm planning on using pure, clear quarts as the flower petals and emerald as the leaves.
Little trees like these four usually go for five dollars apeice. They are made from a variety of base stones. From Left To Right, the bases are polished Phantom Quartz, Bloodstone, Blue Leapord, and Rose Quartz. The Leaves are Snowflake Obsidian, Garnet, Shells (collected from Virginia Beach) and Ameythist.
Another work in progress, titled "Who Are You?". The base of this work is made from Petrified Wood, while the Mushrooms are made from Amethyst and two types of dyed coral. When finished, I plan on having a catepillar (made from adventurine marbles) sitting on the middle mushroom, smoking a hooka. Alice may or may not be present.
Fifth Element, one of my favorite trees. This Tree is sitting on a Rose Quartz base, and is made from Fire Opal chips (for Fire), Clear Quartz (for Air), Dyed Blue Coral (for Water) and Hematite (for Earth). Love, the fifth element, is made from Rose Quartz. The leaves are made from Adventurine.
Little Flower Child. An early experiment. I'm now using Garnet and Emerald to form "Dozen Roses" trees set on little quartz points. They look cute.
Blue Rain was one of my more complex trees, although it is difficult to tell in the picture. It consisted of multiple layers of flowers, which were made of dyed Blue Coral and Adventurine. The base is made of Rose Quartz. It's relative, The Burning Bush, was exactly the same, except it was made of fire opal chips. I've also done this style with Quartz and Ameythist with pretty good results as well.
While not necessarily eye catching, this wind blown bonsai tree is one of my favorites. It is made from a stone that I collected from Lake Minnewaska, near the college town of New Paltz. For obvious reasons, the tree has special meaning for me.
