Songbook 3

The Green Eyed Dragon

Once upon a time lived a Fair Princess most beautiful and charming;
Her Father, the King, was a wicked old thing, with manners most alarming.
And always on the front door mat, a most ferocious Dragon sat,
Who made such a fearful shrieking noise that all you little girls and boys
Beware, take care, and creep upon tiptoe,
And hurry up the stairs, and say your prayers,
And tuck your head, your pretty curly head,
beneath the sheets, the sheets, the sheets.

The Dragon lived for years and years, and never got much thinner.
For lunch, he'd try a Ranger pie, a roast M-U for dinner;
One brave man went 'round with an axe and tried to collect his income tax -
The Dragon smiled with fiendish glee, and sadly murmured 'R.I.P.'
Beware! Take Care! And creep upon tiptoe,
And hurry up the stairs, and say your prayers,
And tuck your head, your pretty curly head,
beneath the sheets, the sheets, the sheets.

The Dragon went down to the kitchen one day where the Fair Princess was baking;
He ate, by mistake, some rich plum cake which the Fair Princess was making.
This homemade cake, he could not digest; he moaned and he groaned, and at last went west -
And now his ghost, with bloodshot eyes at midnight clanks his chains and cries:
Beware! Take care! And creep upon tiptoe,
And hurry up the stairs, and say your prayers,
And tuck your head, your pretty curly head,
Beneath the sheets, the sheets, the sheets. . .

Sir Eglamore

Sir Eglamore, that valiant knight
Fa la, lanky down dilly
He took up his sword and he went to fight
Fa la, lanky down dilly
And as he rode o'er Hill and Dale
All Armed with a coat of Mail
Fa la, la, la, la, la, lanky down dilly

There leap'd a Dragon outof her Den
Fa la, lanky down dilly
That had slain God knows how many men
Fa la, lanky down dilly
But when she saw Sir Eglamore
Oh that you had but heard her roar!
Fa la, lanky down dilly

Then the trees began to shake,
Fa la, lanky down dilly
Horses did tremble, Man did quake,
Fa la, lanky down dilly
The birds betook them all to peeping
Oh! t'would have made one fall a-weeping.
Fa la, lanky down dilly

But all in vain it was to fear
Fa la, lanky down dilly
For now they fall to't, fight Dog, fight Bear
Fa la, lanky down dilly
And to't they go and soundly fight
A live-long day from Morn to Night.
Fa la, lanky down dilly

This Dragon had on a plaguey Hide
Fa la, lanky down dilly
That cou'd the sharpest steel abide
Fa la, lanky down dilly
No Sword cou'd enter her with cuts
Which vex'd the Knight unto the Guts.
Fa la, lanky down dilly

But as in Choler he did burn,
Fa la, lanky down dilly
He watch'd the Dragon a great good turn
Fa la, lanky down dilly
For as a Yawning she did fall
He thrust his Sword up Hilt and all.
Fa la, lanky down dilly

Then like a Coward she did fly
Fa la, lanky down dilly
Unto her den which was haerd by;
Fa la, lanky down dilly
And there she lay all night and roar's
The Knight was sorry for his Sword.
Fa la, lanky down dilly

But riding away, he cries," I forsake it,
He that will fetch it, let him take it."

The Battle at the Bridge of Endercross

"To the river we must go!" cried the champion at arms
"Warriors take your swords and wizards take your charms
There awaits on the fields of the shire an army fierce and cruel
And to them we will prove this day that the force of good does rule"

"Drink a health to the queen and regent and swiftly we must ride
For the army of North Avendar waits by the riverside
And we must stike when the time is right or the battle will be lost
And so we will take haste to fight at the Bridge at Endercross"

So heed the call you loyal sons and run to battle everyone
We'll fight for Queen untill all are lost
At the Battle of the Bridge at Endercross

The army it set forth under a sky both dark and gray
They rode till they came to the river and they turned the Northern way
"Take caution now and silence, all!" the champion did say
"For we must surprise the Avendar if we're to take the day"

Then from ahead there came the sound of soldiers in the field
"It's onward then!" the champion cried and he he raised his magic shield
And there they met the Avendar and there the swords did cross
And the blood, it flowed quite freely beneath the Bridge at Endercross

So heed the call you loyal sons and run to battle everyone
We'll fight for Queen untill all are lost
At the Battle of the Bridge at Endercross

The armies fought from noon to night and the dead lay where they fell
For there were none to bury them. It seemed the rage of Hell
And few did live to tell the tale of the Avendar's demise
It seemed a victory cruel and hard for the ones that did survive

And so, my friends, when daylight came the warriors crawled away
The bodies were too many, so they left them where they lay
The battle it was won that day but the soldiers, they were lost
And the ghosts do struggle to this date by the Bridge at Endercross

They heard the call, the loyal sons, and ran to battle every one
They fought for Queen untill all were lost
At the Battle of the Bridge at Endercross

On Midsummer Day

On midsummer day in the land of Erin
The war with the Firbolg about to begin
Thrice nine of the children of Danu were killed
In the first bloody hurl match upon the great hill

For four days a terrible slaughter took place
The king of the Firbolg with agonized face
At the Morrigan's screaming while circling above
And blood drenched the country of goddesses' love

Derry down, down, down, derry down

Yeokay the Firbolg was killed in his flight
The hand of Nuada chopped off in the fight
Tho battle was ended there was just one thing now
Nuada was blemished, he could not be king

Avoiding occurrence of political wars
The goddesses' children went to the Fomors
The king of the Fomors, he sent them his son
To rule Danu's children and block out the sun

Derry down, down, down, derry down

The name of this evil new ruler was Bres
Stole most of their cattle and taxed all the rest
Ogma the champion was sent to fetch wood
The Dagda was forced to build forts fast as he could

They suffered from insult from famine and cold
Bres would not allow them their pleasures to hold
The Armid, the Dianchet and Miach were known
Attempting to help Nuada take back the throne

Derry down, down, down, derry down

They dug up his hand and they put in place
The magic was worked and the pentagrams traced
Sinew to sinew and nerve to nerve fold
Nuada's eyes glistened and he became whole

A poet and tale teller deserved some respect
I sang songs for Bres tho I didn't expect
To be thrown in a dungeon, no fire, no bread
A curse upon Bres was the next thing I read

Derry down, down, down, derry down

No meat on the plates and no milk of the cows
No money for minstrels, no homes for ourselves
By hoarding and taxing he says he conserves
May Bres receive what he truly deserves

The magic began as the magic was said
And his face became covered with blotches bright red
By being a tyrant he was made a fool
The result of this blemish was he could not rule

Derry down, down, down, derry down

And Nuada returned to the throne once again
And the children of Danu rejoiced to the end
By feasting and drinking all night till we fold
the triumphant children of goddess of old.

Mad Tom of Bedlam

For to see Mad Tom of Bedlam
Ten thousand miles I traveled
Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes
For to save her shoes from gravel.

Still I sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys
Bedlam boys are bonny
For they all go bare and they live by the air
And they want no drink or money.

I now repent that ever
Poor Tom was so disdain-ed
My wits are lost since him I crossed
Which makes me thus go chained

I went down to Satan's kitchen
For to get me food one morning
And there I got souls piping hot
All on the spit a-turning

There I took up a caldron
Where boiled ten thousand harlots
Though full of flame I drank the same
To the health of all such varlets

My staff has murdered giants
My bag a long knife carries
For to cut mince pies from children's thighs
And feed them to the fairies

The spirits white as lightening
Would on me travels guide me
The stars would shake and the moon would quake
Whenever they espied me

No gypsy, slut or doxy
Shall win my mad Tom from me
I'll weep all night, with stars I'll fight
The fray shall well become me

And when that I'll be murdering
The Man in the Moon to the powder
His staff I'll break, his dog I'll shake
And there'll howl no demon louder

So drink to Tom of Bedlam
Go fill the seas in barrels
I'll drink it all, well brewed with gall
And maudlin drunk I'll quarrel

For to see Mad Tom of Bedlam
Ten thousand years I have traveled
Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes
For to save her shoes from gravel.

BlackJack Davey

O Black Jack Davey came riding by
A whistling so merrily
He made the woods all around him ring
And he charmed the heart of a lady
And he charmed the heart of a lady

O come with me my pretty little one
O come with me my honey
I swear by the beard upon my chin
That you'll never want for money

Pull off, pull off your high heeled shoes
All made of Spanish leather
Put on, put on your low heeled boots
And we'll ride off together

She pulled off her high heeled shoes
all made of Spanish leather
She jumped behind him on his horse
And they rode off together

That night her husband he came home
A looking for his lady
Her maid she spoke before she thought
Said she's gone with Black Jack Davey

O saddle me up my coal black steed
My white one's not so speedy
I rode all day and I'll ride all night
And I'll bring home my lady

He rode all night till broad day light
He came to a rive raging
And there he spied his darling bride
In the arms of Black Jack Davey

Pull off, pull off your long black gloves
All made of Spanish leather
And jump behind me on my horse
And we'll ride home together

She pulled off her long black gloves
All made of Spanish leather
She gave to him her lily white hand
and said good-by for ever

Would you forsake your house and home;
Would you forsake our baby ,
to sleep on ground, not feather bed,
And go with Black Jack Davey

Last night I slept in a warm feather bed
Beside my husband and baby
Tonight I'll sleep on the cold, cold ground
In the arms of Black Jack Davey.
