Invited to the Tournament were twelve powerful warriors. Among them were the three Player Characters of
the adventure (for you non-roleplayers, Player Characters are individual characters each played by one 'player'. Everyone
else is played by myself, the Game Master, or GM). Among the other nine was, of course, Eshainin.
From the beginning, Eshainin stayed somewhat aloof around the other tournament fighters. He was not in
in the least unfriendly, like the dark and menacing Lord Pain, but merely polite and in his own class. Dressed in dark,
functional clothing, Eshainin was rarely seen without a smugly confident smile on his face. All these were merely subtle clues
as to the true colors of Eshainin.
Anticipation was high during the first round of the tournament, as everybody was anxious to assess the fighting
capabilities of their possible opponents. Eshainin's first fight was against the dark and formidable Spheran Warlord, Lord Pain.
Due to some clever role-playing on the part of the GM, the bets were almost all placed on the side of Lord Pain. Thus, it was almost
a total upset when Eshainin easily defeated his opponent, to the complete shock of the onlookers. Lord Pain himself was certainly
no weakling, but his power seemed as naught next to the fighting prowess of Eshainin.
From that moment onward, the other fighters started to regard Eshainin in a new light. Due to unforeseen circumstances,
Eshainin bypassed the second round of the tournament, and in the third round he defeated Tearos, a holy warrior of great power. This
victory advanced the still-confident Eshainin to the final round. His opponent was one of the Player Characters, Neflite (yes, the name
is from Sailor Moon). Neflite seemed to come close to beating Eshainin, but unknown to him, Eshainin was not even using his full powers
in the battle.
After the battle, Eshainin took the three PC's aside and told them that he suspected foul play from the Tournament administrators. He
asked them to secretly attend the final battle of the tournament in case anything went wrong. Eshainin's final challenge was to
defeat a gigantic, dragon-like creature (in Spherus, called a 'Drakkhaan'), which he did with considerable ease. As it turns out,
Eshainin was justified in his suspicions, as upon completing the fight, Lanktin (mentioned above) hurled a Universal Globe (the most
powerful attack in Spherus) at him, which almost rendered him unconscious. After the devastating blow, Eshainin fled, leaving the PC's
to face Lanktin and his guards.
The PC's did, in fact, defeat the mighty Lanktin, though they themselves were badly wounded in the battle. However, no sooner was
Lanktin defeated when Eshainin reappeared, this time wearing his spiked, plate armor and fully healed from using the tournament's medical
facilities. Upon seeing the spiked armor, and skull amulet hanging from Eshainin's neck, the PC's finally realized the truth -
Eshainin was in fact a Doom Priest, a member of a religious order dedicated to the Dark God, and to the destruction of the universe.
After the first taste of Eshainin's true power, two of the PC's fled, leaving the third, a warrior named Cuchullin, alone to face the
evil Doom Priest. Though he knew he stood no chance, Cuchullin fought valiantly, buying time for his friends to bring help. The other two
did in fact return to aid in the battle, but it was the appearance of Lord Pain that really saved the day. Together, the three PC's and Pain
managed to overcome Eshainin's power, and end the life of the all-powerful Doom Priest.
Though Eshainin died there, his role in the galaxy of Spherus is not over yet. For, to a follower of the God of Darkness, even death itself
is little more than a minor boundary.
Eshainin (esh-ay-NEEN):
The character of Eshainin made his appearance in the first of a
series of role-playing games that I call 'Super-Adventures', all of which take place in my own role-playing
world of Spherus. The adventure itself focused around a 'Tournament of Champions' - a semi-secret tournament held
to determine the most powerful warrior in the universe. Little did anybody at the tournament know that it was merely
a set-up by one of the shadowy administrators of the Tournament, a man named Lanktin. Lanktin, who was in reality a supremely powerful super-warrior,
was using the Tournament as a front to find the most powerful warriors in all Spherus, capture them, and drain their energy for himself.
