Discovered that you can make powerful warriors out of non fighters. If you don't need the peasant base for taxes, put your Mayans in science towers and have them, and any other Mayans who will not return to a village, come out to be enhanced by Kukulcan.
A fighting science brigade is as powerful as any fort and won't be attacked without the resulting loss in reputation.
