By Master Paladin Being Gorean is living a lifestyle. This lifestyle includes the interaction and relationship between the Men and women who live it. It is grouped with the BDSM community, because of the submission of the women to the dominant Men. There is also the ideas of punishment for failure, displeasing behavior, or disrespect. Gor is not an easy life -- the world from the books is harsh, and the "real life" lifestyle is no less forgiving. Living in the politically correct city of Ann Arbor, I am going to make the ever popular, and no less hated disclosure statement that not all Gorean Masters are Men and not all kajira or slaves are females. Gender and gender references are only made to reflect the vast majority of persons occupying that role and are not to reflect the writers personal opinions as to the ability for a woman to be a Master, nor a boy's ability to submit to another. There is a "natural order" in nature. Humans, like all things in nature, do not always fall into nice little categories. If they did, how would one explain and categorize the duck billed platypus? With that said, onto My opinions of the Gorean Philosophy. What makes a Man a Gorean Master? Looking at Gorean philosophy, the ideal Man is one who possesses honor, respect and acceptance of His place in life. He has a duty to be honest to himself, to respect his own desires, emotions, dreams, and beliefs. In everything a Man does, he must learn control. Knowing and accepting what He is inside, so that He has the confidence in Himself to do what He feels is best for Himself. Being able to understand that He could be wrong about something, and taking the responsibility for His actions. Knowing when He just can't do it all Himself, and knowing how and where to seek help. Being able to learn and grow, every day, and maintaining the control of Himself. "How can you control others, if you cannot control yourself?" (princess, first girl of the House of Paladin) Losing control shows one hasn't mastered Himself. Granted, there are external factors which can cause a reaction, but how one handles the situation as it arises will show how well He has Mastered himself. He is dominant. He is just that. He is not a Gorean Master because He feels that He is necessarily more intelligent or wiser than the kajira that He owns. The Master has the strength of body and mind and the instinctive need to protect, possess, defend and provide for the kajira that He has accepted responsibility of. What makes a woman slave? The basic premise that inside all women is a slave waiting to be tamed is very prevalent in the Gorean philosophies. Within the D/s lifestyle, and to some extent most in the "normal world," women find that they crave to be controlled, or have a deep desire to do anything and everything they can for a man, as long as he is strong in himself, and can show her that strength tempered with compassion. A slave does not expect to be treated in a cruel fashion, but does expect strong discipline when mistakes have been made. she seeks to please a Master. Whether it is to kneel at a Master's feet, get his drink, or anything that she feels would be pleasing to Him. The woman is submissive. she is not weak nor inferior because of it, in fact, the woman is instinctively stronger of will and heart. A Gorean Master's desire to dominate a slave is instinctive. It is not to degrade her nor is it degrading to the kajira because she is secure in being totally feminine. The kajira is sure, strong and proud in her womanhood. she does not submit as acceptance of inferiority, but from strength and passion. she expects a Man to stand strong and be a Man. she desires and flourishes in the strength and control of a Gorean Master. she will open her heart and soul to her Master. she takes comfort in the fact that the Man she will call Master will listened to her words with His ears and heart and He will learn to anticipate her needs and emotions. What she gives is not abnormal, but pure, natural, and the rarest gift a woman can give a man. The slave gives her Master complete and unshakable assurance of her commitment to Him. her submissiveness is a magnificent gift and sacred responsibility to Him. she understands the rarity and purity of this gift for it is her body, heart, mind, and soul. she knows that when her Master gazes at her naked body kneeling before Him, in His mind and heart she is raised above all other women, and all the treasures of the earth. Men and women are not equal, and our society expends too much effort trying to "level the playing field" by trying to make us so. Men and women are parts of the same whole. They compliment each other and make each other complete. The Gorean Master and the kajira each recognize and accept their own worth, and the human need for someone to trust and fulfill their needs. What are the expectations of the Master and the kajira? Just as everyone is different, expectations are different between a Master and the slave he collars. I have a list as part of the contract that My kajira sign that defines what I expect and what they should expect from Me. Generaly speaking, Gorean Masters require the girl's absolute submission and devotion, respectful servitude, companionship and love. He will, in turn, provide the companionship, friendship, compassion, and love to His kajira, discipline when required, and always careful correction and training. Gor is harsh, but not unnecessarily cruel; neither should the Master be. In ancient oriental philosophies such as kung-fu, Tae Kwon Do, Buddhism, Taoism - the goal is to find your center, find a balance in life. The title of Master or Mistress is one of reverence, but it is one that must be earned. Likewise, any girl can call themselves slave or subbie, or whatever, but they have to prove themselves as such, prove they are true Gorean kajira. Anyone can go online and call themselves Master and have no clue as to the responsibilities they take on just by uttering the very word. They call themselves Gorean and yet live a lie behind a computer screen. I know of girl's who call themselves kajira and have never served a Man in real life. They play at this online and think that they know what it means to be Gorean. Then they "try it" in real life and decide it is not fair or too hard. Then the next thing you know, she is calling herself Mistress, or Ubara. I will not dispute that online is fun, but it is not real. I will RPG as a Trekkie. And I can learn a lot about Romulans, and antimatter inducers and such, but I will never be a Klingon Commander. Conversely, you do not hear of people RPG-ing about being Catholic, (My staff will unleash floods and locust?) and I have never seen an RPG for Taoism or Buddism, pretending to be somthing that one is not just to learn and express their creative side? One is a philosophy of life, the other is a way to play and be creative. Show Me a girl who says that they are kajira because they know how to type all of the serves and dances and positions and I will teach her how to become a Klingon Commander, for you cannot learn how to be Gorean by playing online. Show me a truly submissive girl, one who feels an undying burning desire in her belly to serve, to please and to be found pleasing in all of her actions, words and deeds, and I will call her kajira. The slave needs a Master to serve, not a computer to fulfill the needs within herself or her desire to please. The Master, does not require ownership of a girl to prove his worth, or how strong His 2(d)10 sword is to prove he is Master. A true Gorean Master only needs to show his proof by his respect of Himself, of others, and of His world around Him. He carries Himself with pride and Honor. The journey down the path of the Gorean lifestyle is definitely "the road less traveled, and I, non the less, am better for it."
