Some characters have a bond with each other and hence don't want to see them die. When one is close to dying (5-20 HPs) the other will guard them and take the hit. You must have both people in your party for them to protect each other. The odd thing is if both characters are almost died they still will take the hit, then they die, and the person usually dies anyway! So then you have two dead people!

I don't really if just one guards or if both of them guard each other, but anyway here they are.
