Unicorns

- [Loud singing from off-stage]
- The unicorn is a wonderous beast
not nice to shoot at, to say the least
...
- [The rest of the song is best not remembered.]
Should you have access to Creatures & Treasures I-III from RM 2 only, the following paragraphs from RMSS Creatures & Monsters should be of some use:
- Creatures and Monsters, page 85 states:
- Description: A deer's grace mated to a goat's dancing fragility imbues the Unicorn's equine features with an alien, etheral quality. The whorled horn of pearl and the drifting mane and tail of silk further remove the opalescent unicorn from the droll of mortal life.
Black Unicorns are different only in color and their horns have been found in silver, red and blue, but never in gold.
- Lifestyle: Undying, yet subject to death. Virgins alone tempt the White Unicorn into captivity. It dewlls in the sylvan woodlands mainly, hating darkness but rarely taking action against it. Occasionally a female can be seen with a single foal, but new generations are rare.
The Black Unicorn is an evil version of the good Unicorn. Naturally, there is a tremendous rivalry between the good and the black unicorns. Also, Black Unicorns do not sek out noble and virtuous youn maidens for company; they avail themselves of the company of much more base sorts.
- Combat: Aside from its horn, which makes a powerful weapon, the White Unicorn can use the Shield Mastery spell list (closed Essence), Elemental Shields spell list (open Essence), and Spell Reins spell list (closed Essence) to 20th level (they have 8 PPs per level). They can cast spells at 50th level of ability (regardless of their actual level). The Black Unicorns are more powerful in purely physical combat, but do not have the nobler Unicorn's powress in magic.
- Background: The Unicorn is perhaps the most renowned, if not the most magical of all mysterious creatures. Like many such beings, it predated the ascension of Man.
All poisons within a 10 feet radius of its horn are neutralized; if horn is removed, the radius drops to 6 inches. This valuable horn is why self-serving evil men will sometimes convince a virgin to help them caputra a Unicorn. The horn of the Black Unicorn has no magical properties (though they are worth hundreds of gold to the proper buyer).
House rules concerning the use of unicorns
The harmonizing influence of an Unicorn on its forest
I treat a Unicorn's forest as slightly enchanted by the continuous presence of a Unicorn.
I treat this by employing the Geomancer Spell List Harmonize Forces in the Alchemy Companion, page 140.
I change the Harmonize Human Activities spells to Harmonize Animal Activities.
As described in the table below, I enact each spell after a certain time the Unicorn has dwelt in a specific area. The cneter of effect for these spells is mostly a sunny glade where the Unicorn rests.
Spell Level | Time to effect the environment |
1-8 | every 1 - 5 years |
9-16 | every 3 - 15 years |
17-20 | every 9 - 45 years |
25 | 50 - 150 years |
30 | 50 - 150 years |
35 | 50 - 150 years |
40 | 50 - 150 years |
50 | 50 - 150 years |
The maximum area these spells may affect is determined by the size of the forest and the proximity of settlements.
In my world, only elven settelments may be in or adjancent to an area inhabited by a Unicorn. Fey Folk and Rural Spirits often dwell in such areas harmonized by Unicorns since they greatly value the peace and stability imbued by the Unicorn.
I treat the settlement's population x 3 to 10 in meters as the radius of influence for the settlement. In this area, the effect of the Geomancer spells is nullified.
- Note:
- This number is totally artificial and I change the distance based on the type of settlement (tanners, dyers, smiths and lumbering greatly increase this distance due to the influence on the environment).
People intent on harming the forest or not living 'in tune' with nature feel uneasy (treat as -1 per foot to all actions within the boundaries of the forest, when an Essence RR or similar RR is failed).
Game living in this forest is always healthy and in excellent condition. These animals should gain a bonus to hiding / DB / luck when encountering hunters who would upset the natural balance (Humans, Orcs, Dwarves, etc. in most settings).
Rare and exotic plants and flowers would grow in such a forest. The presence of sentient plants such as Treeherds, Slowroots or Awakened Trees is (after a while) quite possible, with the Awakened Trees being calmed by the soothing influence of the Unicorn's presence.
- Note:
- Some myths state that animals and plants in woods where Unicorns dwell gain a certain amount of inteligence / sentience beyond what they 'naturally' posess.
This could explain the existence of Treeherds, Slowroots and Awakened Trees, since Unicorns have existed for a really long time, thus giving the trees ample time to become fully sentient under their influence.
This, of course is only a speculation.
The relations to other types of unicorn-like creatures
The realtions between White Unicorns and their dark brethren is shgrouded in mysteries, not only by the reluctance of any Unicorn to speak about it but by time itself. The separation of White Unicorns and Balck Unicorns dates back as far as the existance of this species. Imbued with magic as they were, their mere existence would have most probably been a thorn in the side of any dark good, be it on Kulthea or Arda or eny other world. Corrupting these beings to create a new race (as it happened later with Elves and Orcs) seems to have been one of the first known atrocities, evil committed (Juat a suggestion).
Fantasy literature / pictures concerning unicorns
Check out the film The Last unicorn, a beautiful film which really perfectly shows the slightly naive state of minf, I would employ for a Unicorn.
Most other sources I could dig up were only suited for children and I'll not include them here (if you want them anyway, just tell me), being somewhat off topic as they are.
