First off, lets talk stats..........
I believe that the most important of all stats is your Aura. Yes...Aura...it determines you mana points and your spirit points (handy when you
start dealing with creatures that cast fear). Second after that I think is your Discipline, it, along with the Aura stat, is dealing with both mental
and physical training points. Next, try to get a good Strength. It gives you a better AS! And it helps you carry things and drag people that have
died.
Note: You can also go with the other stat route...........this is what I chose. My ST is the first stat, then AU, and then DI. This won’t give as
many TP’s but it will give you that important AS when you finally venture out into the Wilds. But the difference between my ST and my DI is
only 3 points, so it really doesn’t matter anyway.
Next you definitely want a good reflexes, this will give you a better DS! This stat will also take away round times (RT), when you wear armor
that you haven’t trained for, then this stat will reduce your RT a little. Or when you ambush something from hiding, then you can get a lower
RT. For instance I can ambush with a morning star in 7 sec. This would normally be 8 sec. With a mace I can ambush in 5 sec. That is REALLY
helpful, but the morning star also has better crits and I usually get a stun or knock the critter on its butt in one hit. For instance I was hunting
and a lesser orc came in the room, I waited to see if anyone was chasing and then I went into stance OFFensive and knocked the critter off its
feet and then it went from a DS of 30 to -25! These stuns and knocking critters over really help big time! Okay.....sorry about that but I am a firm
believer in a high RE. Lets get on to the next stat shall we? I believe that the next stat is intelligence, after all what would you be if you couldn’t
absorb any experience? You sure as heck wouldn’t get past level one any time soon! Then you need a decent Logic, I think this helps with
absorbing also. I would really like it if someone would E-mail me telling me what DI, LO, and IN have to do with experience but I know they help
so I keep them high. Then I chose to pick WI next. If you ever want to pick a box before you get to be level 5 (more on this in a bit), you need a
average WI. Next choose your dexterity, you need this to pick pockets if you are that sort of rogue. If you want to be the kind of rogue that
makes his/her living purely off of this, then you may want to make this a higher priority. I put this a little lower than normal because of the fact
that it grows very fast. I like to try and put my stats that grow fast at a lower position. This helps me when I get to be old and have a 100 in each
stat! Well maybe that won’t ever happen, but it is wishful thinking. Next get your constitution and charisma. Both of these grow at a healthy
rate, if you are a half elf anyway.
Remember all of you guys who are wanting to roll up right now, this is for the adventurer type rogue! Not the pickers in the east tower. If you
want to be one of them then consult with one of the picking guides, I am certainly not the one to talk to on this subject. I couldn’t pick a -30 box
at level 3! (Thief lingo)
all right to sum it all up this is the order in which you should choose your stats
ST, AU, DI, RE, IN, LO, WI, DE, CO, and CH. Or for the other type that gets more TP’s (but not by much)
AU, DI, ST, RE, IN, LO, WI, DE, CO, and CH. Again, I RECOMMEND THE FIRST ONE, BECAUSE THERE IS NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE!
::pant::.
This is what I rolled when I first rolled my character.
36, 43, 85, 49, 52, 88, 82, 35, 49, and 87.
This is where I put them all.
CO 38
DE 43
DI 85
LO 49
IN 52
ST 88
RE 82
CH 35
WI 49
AU 87
I was very happy with these rolls. This took a pretty long time too!
Now this is my guy 4 levels later,
CO 39 -5
DE 56 8
DI 86 13
LO 51 0
IN 54 2
ST 89 19
RE 84 27
CH 38 -1
WI 50 0
AU 87 18
Mana - 9
As you can see I don’t have a lot of negatives on my bonus and my stats have grown rather quickly. Of course the DE and RE got a 10+ boost
because of the fact that I am a rogue.
Race
Well be any race you want to be. I would save your halflings for the super wizard you might roll up. Giantmen for that super
warrior. I like all of the elven races for rogues and I like dwarves too. Actually my family was very much in touch with some dwarven farmers
back in the old days, so I get along pretty good with the dwarven people.
Ahhhhhhh..........Stats are finally done! Now here is the fun part.
Okay now don’t be heading out into the wilds or the catacombs before you are 2. Go to all the places on the DIR (I am sure you already know
about this but just in case), then you will be ready to train for 1. Ug! I forgot about training........oh well I better cover it now.
Training
Okay here is my list
1 armor
2 shield use
2 blunt (I prefer blunt weapons over one handed edged, because they give stuns and knock critters over easier, but if you like OHE, then by all
means, please train edged.)
1 or 2 Disarm
1 or 2 Lock picking
3 stalking and hiding
3 perception
2 ambushing
1 or 2 physical training
1 or 2 first aid
2 pickpocketing
Okay, now you might want to train more in disarming and picking locks but you will have to sacrifice some points someplace else. If you are
going to do that, then take off on the physical training once you have 50+ Hps, I have 52 and only train once every year instead of 2 times a
year.
Another thing is to try and train in combat maneuvers whenever possible, do this when you have saved up awhile, and when you are older.
One more important skill(s) are the climbing and swimming skills, these help with......um.....uh...........oh yeah, swimming and climbing. The fact is
that you can’t get to higher level places without these skills, these can hold off till later too.
When you are really old and are a VERY capable fighter, and VERY capable picker then you might want to think of trying to learn some spells.
These cost a bundle, but from what I hear can be pretty important when you reach those higher levels. You might want to train in all magic
things when you are that old. I.e. mana share, by this time you will have a lot and you don’t want to be selfish with all of the mana since you
aren’t using it that much anyway, unless you are........um........nevermind.:::wink:::
One more thing, if you are into martial arts and things like that you might want to have some brawling skill. Some of you Kung Fu
fighters are pretty dang tough! This was a long time ago but I saw some guy take out a lesser shade in one round of fighting (I think he kicked
or threw it):::wink:::! When you are level one and just exploring this is pretty amazing.
Ahhhhhh.........I think we are done with all of that now, I hope anyway.
What next
Okay now like I said look at the DIR and go to all of those places. By that time you will be able to train for 1. Oh yeah one other
thing, whatever you do, don’t let someone take you to all of those places, I have been dragged around with someone thinking they were
helping me when I didn’t get a single point of experience. Then to get the exp. you have to deliver messages. It is basically like being taken back
one whole level, this really sucks!
Now don’t go into the catacombs or wilds until you are 2, of course you can explore the catacombs but I would be careful in the wilds because a
wolverine might come in and tear you to shreds, this is NOT fun. Do messages, and make that money. Of course it is fun to take a break and go
kill some of those rats, but be careful not to kill someone else’s (more on etiquette later). So by all means, if you are getting tired of running a
message and then running to TSC, then go take a break to do some hunting, that always helps.
At level 2 you can get specially ordered stuff, I am level 4, with TONS of money and still have light leather, a heavy backpack, and a belt pouch.
I just simply don’t care about what my things look like I guess, although it is always nice when you are trying to impress a lady (girl, not level
20+) at the tavern. By the way do take some time to role play every now and again. After all, that is what gemstone is all about. If you see a
lonely character hunting stop to say hello and mingle a little, if you find a lonely lady then ask if she would like a bite of your cupcake, or
whatever. Same with the ladies to the men.
By level 3 go and do some real hunting, out in the wilds. Feel free to go do some troll and lesser orc hunting. You probably could kill a
wolverine but it might take you awhile since their DS is 50. Wolverines and Trolls give you a lot of exp. since wolverines are level 5 and forest
trolls are 6. By the way, when I say troll, I mean forest trolls, not any other kind of troll. If you are out hunting for a forest troll and come across
a hill troll, you better high-tail it out of there, because it will eat you for breakfast. (or lunch, or dinner, whatever the case may be ).
You can do jobs for the blacksmith by this time, probably even earlier, but you don’t get any exp. so it is purely for the money. It is mighty
boring also.
Ahhhh level 4. I am level 4, just in case you missed that up at the top. I hunt trolls, cockatrices, hobgoblins, wolverines, lesser orcs, and greater
orcs (with care). All of these give you money, besides the wolverines, and usually treasure too. Well I guess the only thing that you should be
careful of, is the hill trolls that are near the forest trolls. They will probably still gobble you up so be careful; although I haven’t been hit by one
since I became level 4, but then again I was in stance DEFensive and I had a shield. They have a 90 AS by the way.
After 4...............well if you are extremely careful..........you might be able to ambush a large ogre, but, they have a 100 AS so if you don’t have at
least a 150 DS in defensive then I would stay away. They have a 20 DS from what I hear, but I haven’t actually seen this for myself so don’t say
I didn’t warn you.
After 10........please be careful.......just thinking of those baddies that you guys are up against makes me cringe.
Ambushing tactics
Well this is my favorite way of hunting...........if you have read the other guides then you already know about all of this stuff. I
highly recommend downloading "The darker side of rogues" this was very informational for me and gave me my inspiration to write this guide.
Basically come up to a critter in stance DEF and wait for it to sniff. Then go into stance OFF and ambush for a leg. This is where I get all of my
stuns and knocking them to the ground. This lowers their DS enormously. If this happens finish it off with a few quick hits. Be sure to skin
everything.......even if you don’t want it then just leave it........I am sure there is someone out there looking for a few troll hides. If you don’t get
the stun or knock it down then I just do some "stance dancing". Go get my set of macros from the library if you haven’t downloaded the wizard
or just don’t want to use it. That is if I upload them. I probably will though. Since forest trolls have such low DS’s then this is relatively easy to
do. Just be sure you don’t get caught in OFF, because if you are level 3 and have a 35 DS in off and it has a 65 AS, then it will probably hit you
without any problem.
Other good places to ambush are the right arm, it will lower the AS of the critter so you don’t have to "stance dance" so much and you can get
the fight over quickly. Also think about the head if you have time and are bored. I always like to hit something in the head and kill it instantly!
One more good place I think is the left arm, if you get in a good hit there or even take off the left arm, then it seriously hampers their ability to
defend themselves. Oh yeah the other good spots are the abdominal area and the chest. You can get easier stuns and knock downs with a well
placed shot to one of these areas.
With ambushing, since you are hidden you can take on monsters much higher in level than yourself, this is how I was able to hunt forest trolls
(level 6) at level 3. Now I can take them on without hiding each time I want to hit it. I just get in one good shot to the right arm. Once I have
some serious bleeding from there then I usually just hammer it down with my morning star. I have a 70 AS now so I can get them pretty good on
the arm.
Pickpocketing
Well this is a lot of fun! I can make some quick cash when I need it or when someone is being rude to me I might clean their
pockets. I used this when I was a little younger in the catacombs, I admit this was rude since they were young, and inexperienced but so was I
so I don’t think it mattered. Be careful with this stat and ALWAYS pick someone lower than you, you can tell by the way they act, and what
they wear, except for me. I have gone into the cats empty handed and come back with more than 2,000 silvers on me! This is a lot when
you are young. I have many, many strategies to picking pockets and not getting caught, this is something you must learn on your own.
Again please be careful at picking pockets, you can get killed very quickly by that warrior that is the only one to train in perception in elanthia!
Avoid PvP. at all costs. Make up excuses why you were stealing, PvP is not part of GS3! If you decide to pick others pockets, be sure you can
take them on if you get caught but don’t give the first swing. If he/she continues to try and kill you and you have given your best shot to not
kill him then count to 10 and give it another shot!
Etiquette
I nearly forgot about this category. You should always be nice to others, try not to ruin the time they are having on gemstone. There is nothing
that I hate worse then when you attack a troll and kick the @#$% out of it in one hit and some guy comes in and says "that was mine!". Of
course I always wait but if no one comes in in 6 sec. then they have a REALLY long RT. And then you say you are sorry and give some gems
or silver off of the baddie or even leave and let him/her search it. So if you sense that this is the case and you are about to yell at someone who
did take the time to wait but you had a high RT, just walk away. If you really wanted that one bad, then say, "I was chasing that one.". Usually
they will gladly share the wealth and gems if there are any. Just be nice, that is all there is too it. If they say "I don’t care" or something like that
and they happen to not be a cleric or empath, make a macro that says PICKPOCKET . continually press this and when
they come, you have taken all of there money! It is fun and you feel you have taken out your anger. But if you choose to do this, then you are
at your own risk. I like doing it though.
For all of the people who lose their money, then just consider that you were being rude and try to clean up your act.
One other thing, I used to hate it when I had my 2400 baud modem and I was hunting in the sewers of the catacombs when I get passed up by 5
other people heading down one of the spokes and I don’t get any of the critters at the end. If you are young and have a super deluxe model 28.8
modem that is REALLY fast, then consider the other people that are tagging along on their 2400 snail, just go to another spoke or something.
Maybe no one else minds but I hate this! By the way this usually isn’t as crowded as the normal parts of the cats.
Picking
As I said, if you ever want to pick a box before you are 5 then you want train more in the disarming and picking locks categories. I
am more of the adventurer type rogue, so I only trained once in both of these when I trained twice in physical training. (If you didn’t get that,
reread that last sentence a few times) If you do decide to go with picking as your primary skill then please don’t pick before you are
level 5. But every rogue that I know has picked a box before they were 5, including me. Let me just tell you one thing, only pick your own boxes
and in an area where there are no other players. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if you go off and try to pick a box and it blows up in your face. I
also think it is a good idea to train in perception 3 times each level, no matter if you are the adventurer or the picker.
Well I think I have just about wrapped up this edition of the "better rogues and ambushing" v.2.0
If anyone has any compliments about this guide or has any additions, then please contact me at BartP535@aol.com..........I know it is a dumb
name but it is the one they picked for me so I just took it.
I have read that the best rogue is a secret one, so I will not give out my Elanthian name. If you think you know who I am and you agree that the
best rogue is a secret rogue then don’t blurt it out, maybe we can go hunting together sometime. I am very friendly and only pick the pockets of
people I don’t like.
Note:
1. Before you turn 2, get some deeds, I make it a rule to have 6 at all times. Talk to people on how to obtain these, and if you can, use gems.
You’ll know what I mean.
2. Don’t pick the pockets of clerics or empaths. You don’t want to get a bad reputation with the healers.
3. Since rogues are usually pretty wealthy, always tip generously to clerics, empaths, and other rogues for picking that box that you couldn’t
handle.
4. Don’t pick boxes at nodes, most likely there are clerics and empaths nearby; they don’t like to be blown up.
One other note:
To all of the empaths out there:
I once needed a healing and since I have the clothing of a level 1 player, they thought I was young. I don’t
know why but this particular empath didn’t like younger players. It really ticked me off when he/she ignored my requests for a heal. I acted as I
normally do, very polite. He/she whispered to all of the empaths in the room, I think he/she told them not to heal me, but I could be wrong. So I
had to go to another healing hot spot.
I don’t want to get a bad reputation with the healers so I always tip generously, and if I don’t have any silver on me at the time, I always give
them a worthwhile gem, or at the very least, let them know I am very grateful of their services.
