Darkbrick’s Guide To Sorcery

Darkbrick’s Guide To Sorcery

By, Darkbrick Alapalapa

During all my years in Elanthia I’ve learned many things about all the professions. I’ve been Warriors, Wizards, Rangers, and even Bards. However, my favorite profession was by far the Sorcerer. Being a sorcerer is an incredible challenge during the early years, but can be so much fun later down the road. If you’re not willing to work for it, put this guide down and become something else.

Good, you’re still reading. You deserve to know that the sorcerer becomes one of the strongest professions later on. Apparently, you’re a dedicated person, so let’s get moving…

Two basic ideas:

    1. DO NOT use "Quick-Gen". Quick-Gen determines all of your statistics automatically and you’ll regret it later on when you find that your guy stinks and have to re-roll.
    2. Be sure to roll higher than a 620 when you use "Full-Gen". The generator will give you 10 numbers. 3 of the numbers will be from 50-90, another 3 will be from 40-60, another 3 will be 20-50, and the last one will be from 20-100. Some tips on getting a good roll are: Get the last number to be 90+, have no numbers lower than 35, and never accept any 20’s.

This will take some time and work, but I guarantee you that the work is well worth the effort. You will be very pleased.

Okay, so you’ve got your 620+ roll sitting there. You ask: "What am I supposed to do with ‘em?" Well, I’ll tell you. My view on stat placement is in no way perfect, but I believe it to be the best way. From highest number to lowest, place them about like this:

AURA, WIS, LOG, STR, DIS, CHR, CON, INT, RFLX, DEX

Here’s why:

Aura- Is the most important stat. Not only does it determine your

Casting strength, but it also adds to Mental and Physical training

Points and determines your mana. Try to place a number in the low 90’s or high 80’s. The only reason I say that is because you get a +10 bonus just for being a Sorcerer.

Wis- Wisdom also affects your casting strength, and adds to Training

Points. However, it does not add to mana like Aura does. It also tends to grow quickly. Try to place a number in the low 90’s or high 80’s also. You get a +10 bonus in this stat.

Log- Logic grows very slowly as you age, so a higher starting number is crucial. It affects how much field experience your mind can hold and how quickly you can convert it into real exp. This also adds to Mental Training Points.

Str- Strength helps you out at the beginning of your life when you have little or no mana to spare on casting spells. This determines your attack strength (AS), and how much you can carry before you suffer roundtime (RT) penalties. However, a very high number will

Tend to lower your Mental Training Points.

Dis- A higher number in discipline is also crucial. It is counted big-time in your training points. This also affects the amount of field exp. Your mind can hold, and it doesn’t grow that quickly.

Chr- Another slow-to-grow stat, but it isn’t as crucial as the others. A higher number helps in Mental Training points and gives you better dealings with merchants.

Con- Constitution determines your Health points, and enhances your poison/disease resistance. It also creates Physical Training Points, but since Sorcerers have no large need for many PTP’s, this stat can be afforded to be placed lower.

Int- This stat grows very quickly and helps to produce some Mental Training points. But, since it grows so quickly, high placement is not needed. This also affects conversion of field exp. to real exp.

Rflx- Reflex increases your base Defensive Strength(DS). You might be thinking "What? Are you nuts? A low value for this?!". Well… yes. Thanks to enchanted armor, magic metals, and defensive spell that we learn, we don’t need the huge bonus that a warrior may need. Plus, It also grows at a brisk rate.

Dex- The only thing this helps with is maneuvering, skinning, and effects how well you cast aimed spells. Since sorcerers don’t use aimed spells (unless you plan on using wands) we don’t need to waste a higher placement of this stat.

Selection of a race is very important since most of the actions are based on the stat bonuses, not the actual stat. I have included a table to show the race modifiers…

Now, if you look at all the stats, you obviously see why Dark Elf sorcerers are so numerous. They have the perfect bonuses. Wisdom and Aura are the two stats that make up a sorcerer’s casting strength. The formula looks like this:

CS=(Levelx3)+(AURA bonus + WIS bonus)/2 + # of sorcerer spells + # of MnE/2 + # of MnS/2

This is the fun part. By selecting certain skills you can customize your character to be very unique. Although, there will be certain things you will have to train in to be an effective sorcerer. Sorcerers are one of the most restrictive professions in GS training-wise. They tend to suffer the most penalties for just about every physical activity.

Skills are "learned" by expending training points, both Mental and Physical. Every time you train in a skill the cost to train in it again during the same training period doubles. You will probably have to exchange Physical points for mental points if you plan on completing some extensive training. You get 1 mental point for every physical point and vice versa.

I have listed the different skills and how many trainings you should do in each. 0 = No trainings recommended, INF = Infinite. Never Stop.

Spell Research (INF) Spell research allows you to learn spells. Successful sorcerers will double train each level in this for life. Be sure to learn at least one sorcerer spell each level. The amount of sorcerer spells that you know affects your casting strength. However, you cannot use spells that are higher than your own level.

Mana Sharing (24-40) By training in this skill 24 times, it allows you to transfer 100% effectively with other 100% effective people. By training more than 24 times, you are able to increase the chances of success for less than 100% people.

Scroll Reading (0-25) This skill is helpful for using spells that are not in the Sorcerer, MnE, or MnS circles. Learn it only if you have the extra training points.

Magic Item Use (0-25) This is mainly for want usage… A wizard’s skill. Sorcerers don’t use wands as much. Don’t bother using this skill unless you really have the need to wave a wand.

Spell Aiming (0-20) Since Warding spells are what sorcerers use best, they require no spell aiming. This is another skill used for wizards and their wands.

Edged/Blunt Weapons (INF) Unless you plan on being an absolute, 100%, pure spellcaster, don’t bother stopping your training in this skill. When you run out of mana, and you’re fighting a monster that you know will have some nice prizes, but you don’t have a sword or good enough training to hit it, you’ll understand my point. = )

Other Weapons (0) Trust me, they are NOT worth it. Too many training points required and sorcerers don’t have the strength to wield them effectively. They are best left up to the warriors.

Shield Use (INF) Due to the spell hindrance of armor, there is no other defensive boosting option than to use magic metals, enchanted items, or shields. Every time you train in this skill, it raises your DS. The defensive spells can’t do it all on their own.

Armor Use (4) I suggest you outfit yourself with full leather, then train in this skill to totally train away the 1 second roundtime penalty. Full leather gives no spell hindrance, and is easy to train the 1 sec. off of.

Physical Training (12-INF) Do this until you reach your maximum HP number, than you can pretty much stop. The health helps… I know.

Climbing (10) Ten trainings will get you into just about anywhere in Elanthia.

Swimming (10) Ten trainings of this will also help you get just about anywhere in Elanthia.

Perception (INF) Perception has many uses as a sorcerer. If you learn the spells Unlock and Disarm you will need this skill to see the traps on the box you are about to open. This also helps you notice thieves in your coin pouch, and hidden people.

Picking Pockets (0) I frown upon it. Even when I was a rogue for a short time, I never trained in this. It just makes people angry, and they usually kill you.

First Aid (0-40) Helps you tend light or moderate wounds if you can’t make it to an empath in time, and also aids in skinning critters for their pelts/skins that can be sold for money.

Trading (0-20) Improves your dealings with merchants. Go for it if you want to and have the extra training points.

Disarm Traps (0) All you need is to see them, then cast Disarm. No real need to manually do it.

Pick Locks (0) Don’t bother, you’ll learn the Unlock spell later down the road. That will do the work for you.

Stalking & Hiding (0-20) Let’s you prepare for ambushing. Considering that sorcerers are not born fighters you don’t really need much of this. This skill is more of a role-playing item for sorcerers.

Ambush (0) Sure you can hide, but what if you don’t have the strength to hit the critter anyways? Don’t bother. Use magic.

Multi-Opponent Combat (0) No real use for it until the new combat system is implemented… If it is ever implemented. It keeps yourself from being overwhelmed by too many enemies.

Two Weapons (0) Interesting concept. Too expensive. But, shields are needed.

Combat Maneuvering (0-INF) Good for later down the road. Too expensive for younger sorcerers. It adds +1 to your AS for every 5 points of this skill.

What I do:

Spell Research (x2)

Shield Use

Edged Weapons

Perception

Mana Sharing (x2)

Physical Training

Feel free to add anything you want to your own training. That’s just what I do.

Magic spells are cast from your mana supply. To use them you must first type "PREPARE ", then you can "CAST AT ". Be sure to keep an eye on your mana supply. If you use more mana than you have, you overextend yourself and go into shock.

It takes time to prepare your spell based on what level the spell is that you’re casting and what level you are on…

Spell is 6+ levels below your level 0 second prep time

Spell is 3-5 levels below your level 5 second prep time

Spell is 0-2 levels below your level 10 second prep time

Sorcerers can draw from the Sorcerer, Min. Elemental, and Min. Spiritual Circles.

Sorcerers have a unique ability when in combat. Since there is no AS involved with their magic, they can sit in stance guarded while they fire away with their warding spells. So, while other magic classes are stance dancing you can take it easy and always be safer than the next person.

As you fight, your mind will slowly numb due to the amount of experience it is processing. Once you reach your limit (Your mind can’t take much more of this! You must rest!), excess experience is lost. You can keep track of how much exp. you’re processing by typing EXP.

0% Clear As A Bell 62-75% Becoming Numb

0-25% Fresh and Clear 75-90% Numb

25-50% Clear 90-100% Must Rest

50- 62% Muddled

Now that you’ve rolled, placed your stats, trained, and are now in the land of Elanthia, you’re probably wondering what to do next. Well, guess what? Today is your lucky day. I’m going to give you some tips to get you going.

Level 0 Visit all the places that appear when you type "DIR", then head to the inn, check in, and congrats! You’re now on level 1.

Level 1-3 Not much you can do. Remember how I said that being a sorcerer is tough to start off? Well, it all begins now. Start by visiting the Raging Warrior Thrak. Don’t know where he is? Well, I’m not gonna tell you. Use your good sense and ask around or find it yourself. Now, the only thing you can do is deliver messages. Go to Moot Hall and ASK CLERK FOR JOB in the debtors office. You’ll receive, not only experience, but also cash! Pay off your debt and open an account at the bank to store your money.

Every once in a while you can go fight rats or ants in the catacombs if you get bored delivering messages. Beware of the crowds though. You can try to sell the Ant Pincers and Rat Pelts at the furrier for some light cash.

Level 4-7 Here it is… The toughest part. If you make it, you earn my respect. No more delivering messages. You’re too old, my friend. I’d suggest that you go and fight snowcats or hobgoblins near Hobland. However, on level 4 you might not be strong enough. In that case, go and fight rats/ants. The going is slow, but you can do it. I have faith in you. ; )

Level 8-12 You made it. It’s still going to be tough for the next few levels, but it ain’t nothing like what you just went through. I suggest that you hunt Manticores and Thraks, but it’s usually WAY too crowded there. In this case, go fight Water Moccasins and Cobras in the graveyard or Thief Gnolls in the Mossy Caverns. Greater Kappas and Crystal Golems(if you’re strong enough, watch out!) are also an option.

Level 13-18 I don’t know too much about this, but I suggest going after Krolvin Mercenaries near the Krolvin Mine. Fire Rats, Fire Cats, and Cave Trolls are also pretty good.

Level 19-25 Life is grand. You thought it was good in levels 13-18, well it only gets better. You can hunt many things at this level. Stone Giants, Warcats, and many more.

Level 25+ On to the Spider Temple for fun and riches. Check out the Hooded Figures in the Broken Land too. It’s almost like Sorcerer VS. Sorcerer combat!

I think this guide is pretty darn good. But, I left some stuff out for you to find out on your own. There’s a lot out there for you to find and do. Don’t let it slip through your fingers. Talk to people, interact with society. Doing these things is what make Gemstone the best online game… Ever.

I’d like to give a special thanks to Shytok OfGhul. His guide has been my mentor all through my Sorcerer life. This guide probably wouldn’t have ever existed without his being around to make me think. Using my new knowledge and old is what made this guide.

Also, thank you for reading this guide. I will update it when I can with new information I learn. I’ll see you in Elanthia!!
