The Symbols of Voln The Order of Voln is dedicated to the release of undead from their bondage. To help its members achieve this end, the Lords and Ladies of Liabo created special Symbols. The Symbols are taught to initiates sequentially as the initiate generates enough favor with the Lords and Ladies by slaying undead creatures. Favor may also be used to invoke one of the symbols already learned, but by doing so slows the initiate's progress up the Order. Many Symbols gain in effectiveness and duration as the member gains higher steps in the Order. Throw/Punch/Kick call on the member's Brawling skill. Note: The Symbol of Recognition does not use favor. The Throw/Punch/Kick symbols do not -- technically -- use favor providing they are used on undead targets. They do however, require favor to use. Step 1. Symbol of Recognition reveals members and Masters of the Order and undead creatures in the room. Step 2. Symbol of Blessing duplicates the clerical spell Holy Weapon, 2 swings/level. Step 3. Symbol of Thought allows you to broadcast a thought to all Voln members who also have this Symbol. Step 4. Symbol of Recovery restores some lost HPs. Step 5. Symbol of Courage increases AS and defense against Fear spells. Step 6. Symbol of Protection increases DS. Step 7. Throw lets the member Throw undead;, possibly resulting in damage, weakened stance, or being thrown to the ground. Very effective with a group, when another can attack the downed creature. Requires both hands to be free. Step 8. Punch lets the member Punch undead with his or her free right hand. Step 9. Kick lets the member Kick undead, preferably with a free hand. Hurts more than Punch, but has a slightly longer RT. Step 10. Symbol of Calming is a mass-effect version of the Major Spirit spell Calm (201), effective against undead. Step 11. Symbol of Sleep is a mass-effect version of the Wizard's Sleep spells 501 etc. effective against undead. May also knock out other adventurers in the room. Step 12. Symbol of Turning is a mass-effect version of the various Clerical Repel Undead spells 301 etc. Step 13. Symbol of Mana This Symbol restores 50 mana points to the user. Occasionally, an acolyte of Voln will experience "a special blessing from Koar", which doubles one's mana. Step 14. Symbol of Sight works like the Locate Person spell (116), and gives the acolyte a brief vision of the other member. Voln members will be able to sense who is looking in on them. It is used by entering Symbol of Sight [Target]. Step 15. Symbol of Holiness allows the member to bless any weapon, including those of magical metals such as vultite. Step 16. Symbol of Submission allows members to turn aside undead. Step 17. Symbol of Restoration recovers lost HPs. Step 18. Symbol of Need lets others know where you are, even when dead. Step 19. Symbol of Retribution allows members when alive, or dead to strike a mass of opponents, similar to a Cone of Lightning spell. Step 20. Throw 2 is an improved version of Throw (Symbol 7) Step 21. Punch 2 is an improved version of Punch (Symbol 8) Step 22. Kick 2 is an improved version of Kick (Symbol 9) Step 23. Symbol of Preservation casts Preservation ("LK") on yourself. Step 24. Symbol of Dreams quickens spirit point, health, and mental recovery. Step 25. Symbol of Return returns the member's group back to the Voln Monastery, or to the nearest focus. Step 26. Symbol of Invitation enables a Master to invite people to join the Order. This is the only way for senior members of another order to switch to Voln. The symbol is used by entering Invite [Target]. Ideally, Masters should spend some time talking to the new invitee about the order and its expectations.
