The DarkTown Legend
You could say I lost my faith in science and progress,
You could say I lost my Belief in the holy Church
-Sting, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
In the beginning, when all of mankind was but a child in this world, one power took precedence over all. The ancestors of the human race were driven and controlled by the mysterious forces of magic. Shamans of the old and forgotten clans drew upon this energy to aid them in their struggle for survival. Using the primal forces of magic, ancient magicians were able to create and destroy.
This changed however, and as the eons went by, new and different practices came about. During the period before the Middle Ages, religion became an instrumental part of the lives of many. Religion brought about a greater means of social control and the basis for a more stable government. Priests who could communicate with gods and divine miracles gave people something to look up to. Creation and destruction came about through sheer belief and faith in those who were greater than humankind. Even though the powers of the avatars were great and many, they too changed with time.
This next shift in power brought about a revolutionary change in human culture. As the strength of the divine religion dwindled and people began to lose faith, higher levels of technology began to appear. More advanced civilization techniques spread across the continents, covering the land with new scientific discoveries. Human advancement was travelling at a great speed, but to what destination? This was the furthest developed stage thus far, but the final outcome was still unclear. Immense destructive capabilities of high grade explosive and the creation of life under the control of genetics became reality. Centuries of technology passed and even with this advanced power it too began to falter.
For all of recorded and unrecorded history, the three powers have ruled over the cosmos. Each one had its chance at control. But what will happen now? Will magic return to continue the cycle? Maybe the gods will return and religion will once again dominate the universe. What if technology fights back and wins the world over again? Perhaps this struggle is prolonging the inevitable apocalyptic conflict that will be resolved in a full-scale confrontation by all three powers. The resolution of these events will only be known when it is all over, and when only one side stands to rule supreme over the world...
But, where does this leave the average man (or woman)? In the magical land of suburbia, with his little cottage, white picket fence, minivan, 2.4 children, a dog, and a common 9 to 5 routine. Yes, he is fighting for the American dream. At least until his little world falls apart. Apocalypses have the tendency to affect the lives of many in this way.
Right now, the world is perched on the edge of one such cataclysm, and your character has had either the good luck, or great misfortune of knowing so. Science has started to falter and rumors of mystical and mythical occurrences have come about. Nothing is what it seems to be.
That pleasant little reality has been shattered. Maybe your teenage daughter has run away to join a cult. Or maybe the boy down the street can lift objects simply by looking at them. Perhaps your dog talks to you now. Or maybe you just can't get that goddamn remote to work.
The average man has been thrust into the role of hero. The three forces of the apocalyptic cycle have their champions, but who will be the champion of the common man? Science, Religion, and Magic have all lasted until now. Today is the day of the common hero, for it is he who will bring salvation to this soon to be shattered planet. But, who will lead this mission? Will it be you, hero...?
What is DarkTown
DarkTown is an original role-playing game set in a modern day, gothic punk world. It was created, written, and Copyrighted by Ben Reading and Reg Mc Reynolds. All of the cool artwork was done by Derek Stevens, Phil Reed Jr., and Christopher Shy (Propaganda Publishing). The game, DarkTown, is based on the shortcomings of blind faith and the hubris inherent in the human race.
The character classes reflect the modern day social strata and beliefs of society, so as to reflect the real world as closely as possible. With the exception of the mentalist classes, True Priests and Mages, all of the classes exist today, in some form or another.
