The Powers of the Apocalypse

The three powers which drive the universe are Magic, Religion, and Technology. But, only one of these powers can be in control at any one time. The Apocaltptic cycle refers to the order of rotation of the powers. At first, Magic was the dominant force, back when man was young. Before the civilized Sumerians arose in the Tigris and Euphrates river valley, primative humans came to worship and believe in the powers of magic. Then came organized religion.

As civilizations grew, bigger and better things rose in power. When the ancient Sumerians invented religion, the reign of magic had ended. The mysteries of the universe were now explained in a divine context, be it Polytheistic or Monotheistic. During the time of the dark age, at the height of the power of religion, the crusades were fought in the name of Christianity. But, as technology grew, religion began to lose meaning. Copernicus, Newton, Darwin and others began a new era of understanding.

The power of technology had begun. Physics, evolution, astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, and early microbiology had established the basis for rational thought. Intellectuals could now explain the universe according to a series of theories, laws, or equations. This power allowed mankind to become the ultimate masters of their environment. Industrialization, the atomic age, and now the information age have all reigned as technological feats. But man has grown to be too dependent on his technological advances.

With the cycle at its end, one can only wonder what is to become of the universe. As a warrior of the apocalypse, it is the player's job to decide what team he or she will be fighting for. Will you play an intellectual scientist, a determined priest, an intuitive mage, or a man in the middle. You decide.

Magic

Drawn into the circle that dances around the fire
We spit into our hands and breathe across the palms

-Peter Gabriel, The Rhythm of the Heat

Magic is the mystical power of the unknown which runs the universe. The source of this magical energy, however, is undefined. Mages can only harness and use magic, though they do not truly understand how or why. Using it, magicians can summon creatures from other planes, create crackling fire and brimstone from thin air, draw lightning bolts from the heavens, and cause death upon command. These forces come about from an apparently nonexistent state, and only the mages themselves know the secrets of conjuring and evoking. All others stand in awe...

Religion

Jesus he knows me, and he knows I'm right,
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
-Genesis, Jesus he knows me

Religion offers the world's populous comfort, safety, and control. Without an explanation for the unknown, the world would be a very strange and unwelcoming place. The supreme power rests in the hands of gods and deities who can cause colossal and catastrophic events to occur all over the earth. During the time of religion, avatars walked the planet, armies were formed to defend sacred lands, temples were built, and wars were waged in the name of the gods. The commanding presence of these supernatural beings was immense at this time. Firm believers of religion were able to perform miracles, and those who were empowered by the gods exerted control over the simple populous. People, after all, will follow anyone, if it is for a "good" cause...

Technology

All of the buildings and all of the cars
were once just a dream in somebody's head

Peter Gabriel, Mercy Street

Technology is the force that runs the information age. New and important discoveries are made all of the time which enhance our quality of life. Laser weapons, guns, explosives, automobiles-all have come about as a result of the basic sciences. Math, physics, biology, and chemistry, along with other fields have made all these advanced discoveries possible. Only by knowing can science be powerful. Afterall, the unknown is not mystical or special, it is just an enexplained aspect of reality. What science aims to do is explain this unknown. By utilizing the physical world to its fullest extent, science allows the possible to happen. Computer warefare, genetic engineering, and advanced medical care are but some of the qualities that modern day technology can offer.
