    Background:

Valan was born to Isis and Larin among the jungles many, many turns ago. As a youth, he did alot of hunting. It was on a hunting trip at the age of 21 turns that he sighted a bristleboar drinking from the river from his position on a tree branch. Just as he was about to strike, the branch broke and he fell into the river below and was carried downstream and over the waterfalls. When he was able to get to the shore, he was miles from his home. He ended up wandering the world, journeying from one elf holt to another.

He came upon the lodge of the gobacks on his travels and came to be close to a female goback called Ros. They left the lodge together to find his way to his childhood home finally, by now Ros was carrying his first cub. They were camped not far away from his old home when he felt a strange calling. He moved further into the jungles when he met, and recognized, Kiera. The recognition was quickly resolved and he hurried back to his camp to find Ros gone. He tracked her to the desert to find her body lying among the dunes. He packed her up and carried her to where he knew the palace to be and buried her remains near it. Still plagued with guilt, he returned to his home and to Kiera.

He waited until a few turns after his son, Valier, was born before he left for the lodge again to tell those there of Ros' passing and since then, he had made a trip to the lodge every so many turns. On one such trip back home from the lodge, he finally became bonded to a panther. They traveled together for quite some time until they came upon a human village being attacked by another group of humans. Confused at the sight, he remained hidden with his panther. It wasn't until he heard a child crying in a slowly burning hut that he rushed into action, his panther following, to get the child. Once inside however, one of the attacking humans came in and a fight ensued with the hut still burning. During the fight, the hut collapsed on them all. Only Valan managed to get free of the wreckage, his panther, the human, and the child already dead.

All these tragedies became too much for him. The loss of Ros and her cub, the sight of humans killing their own kind, the death of the child and his panther. It caused a change in him. He became more akin to the way his bond panther was, relying on instinct rather than feeling. He wandered around in the forest, the isolation only worsening the condition. Over several turns though, he found himself near the jungles again. He ended up encountering Lursa, Windkin, Mender that were on their way to the catelf camp. He attempted to snatch some food away from Lursa and was pursued by Windkin. Windkin subdued him while Mender healed his physical wounds, although his mental scars were different. It was Lursa who brought him back to his senses using traditional goback treatment. She slapped him around and yelled at him.
