This is Somersby, a small town in the middle of the Specter Forest. This is the first town you go into in the game.

Lance is standing in front of what symbolizes the Nine Pillars of the World, with each statue representing the Highest, and the cross in the middle representing Odal. This representation is an indicator of the present state of the Pantheon, since if one of the Highest is weakened in any way the statue that represents them will be cracked or tarnished in somer way. If the Highest dies, their statue breaks. You can return here to get an idea of what the Highest might be doing, and whether you are ready to face them in battle.
