Commander:

The commander has 3 things he need to do:
1. Fire the 12.7mm (0.5 inch) Machinegun.
2. Locate targets using either the CITV, vision blocks, or just look out of the tank. When a target is detected, he orders the gunner to fire at it.
3. Navigate using his IVIS, a new land navigation system.

The tank commander's station looks like this:

In the commander's station the commander is quite safe.

The vision blocks, the least useful, looks like this:

While looking through the vision blocks the commander is quite safe too.

Sorry that I couldn't get a picture of a tank commander out at the hatch.
While being outside the hatch, the tank commander is vulnerable to artillery, machineguns etc.
