Monkey Island - The Saga Explained
Part I - The Secret of Monkey Island
(music from the game now playing)
Young Guybrush Threepwood arrives on Mêlée Island in the Caribbean to seek his fortune by becoming a pirate. At the Scumm Bar, the local pirate hangout, he learns why the pirates are not out pirating.
The Governor of Mêlée Island, Elaine Marley, invited the fearsome pirate LeChuck to dinner and he fell in love with her. She did not love him back so to impress her LeChuck sailed off to find the legendary secret of Monkey Island. A mysterious storm sank his ship, leaving no survivors. This was not the last of LeChuck however. His ghost ship became an unholy terror upon the sea, sailing the waters between Mêlée and Monkey Island.
In the bar Guybrush also meets three important looking pirates (see picture at the top of this page). They tell him he can become a pirate by successfully completing three trials: defeating Carla, the Sword Master of Mêlée Island, stealing the Idol of Many Hands from Governor Marley's mansion, and finding the legendary lost treasure of Mêlée Island. Guybrush sets off to complete his quests.
After a stuntman job at the Fettucini Brother's Circus to earn money Guybrush buys sword fighting lessons from Captain Smirk who teaches him that the true secret to sword fighting is not only a sharp sword, but a sharp wit as well. After practicing insults on the local pirates, Guybrush defeats Carla, the Sword Master. He digs up the Mêlée Island treasure after buying a map from a local citizen. Guybrush then takes the Idol of Many Hands from the Governor's mansion but is caught by Sheriff Fester Shinetop, who is really the ghost pirate LeChuck cleverly disguised. Governor Marley arrives. She and Guybrush discover a mutual attraction between them. Unfortunately Guybrush is too nervous to speak with her. Elaine, annoyed by his shyness, leaves but lets him keep the idol. Shortly later Shinetop ties Guybrush to the idol and throws him off the Mêlée Island dock.
Luckily Guybrush can hold his breath for ten minutes and escapes his plight. Elaine however, returns to rescue him, is kidnapped by Shinetop/LeChuck and taken to his secret hangout deep beneath Monkey Island. Guybrush, realizing his feelings for Elaine, is determined to get a ship, crew and go after her. Fear of LeChuck allows Guybrush to recruit only a crew of three - Carla the Sword Master, Meathook, a parrot-fearing hermit of nearby Hook Isle, and Otis, an escaped prisoner from the Mêlée Island jail. From Stan's Used Shipyard Guybrush buys the "Sea Monkey", the only ship to ever return from Monkey Island - but without a human crew!
Once the voyage begins the crew becomes more interested in vacationing than rescuing so Guybrush cooks up a voodoo recipe spell he discovers on board. It knocks him unconscious and mysteriously directs the ship to Monkey Island. Once there Guybrush meets castaway Herman Toothrot, the first mate on the Sea Monkey's last voyage.
Guybrush also becomes friendly with the Monkey Island vegetarian cannibals who tell him that the entrance to LeChuck's lair is the giant, sacred monkey head they worship. The cannibals can not destroy the annoying LeChuck and his undead crew dead with their usual exorcism potion because LeChuck has stolen the rare root that is the potion's main ingredient. Guybrush, hoping to destroy LeChuck and rescue Elaine, promises to find and return the root to the cannibals. They give Guybrush a magical navigator's head which guides him through the hellish system of catacombs beneath the island that leads to LeChuck's ghost ship.
Guybrush finds the ship and gets the root. He is rewarded by the cannibals with a ghost killing voodoo root beer. By now though LeChuck had returned to Mêlée Island with Elaine, planning to marry her. Elaine stops the wedding after which Guybrush arrives and destroys LeChuck...or so he thinks.
