I have some interest in any foreign language, but this was ever focused on Japanese, mainly for its uncommon system of writing in the begining. So I began to study Japanese by myself, and August 1996 I started to attend a course in the cultural center of the University of São Paulo in São Carlos city.
As it's hard to find someone to practice with, the best place I found to do this is the mailing lists of the University of Hawaii at Hilo. These lists are owned by professor Laura Kimoto and controlled by an automatic server.
Existing lists so far are the following:
Concerning Gakusei lists, the number indicates the level of the language. To make your subscription to any one of them just send an e-mail to listproc@hawaii.edu with the command subscribe listname yourname. Or with help for further information.
There I met Steve Baker who has a home page with several links for those who has some interest in Japanese language and culture. It's a great deal!
Portuguese is spoken not only in Brazil and Portugal. Just see that in Encontro* ("meeting") homepage of the PortugalNet. If you prefer start from Africa, take a look at the African authors' homepage*.
