[Repertoire of Contrabass]
(This section was translated by
Hiroshi Araki, amateur bassist. Thanks to Hiroshi from author.)

Works written originally for contrabass

I can say clearly, that we have as little original repertoire as violists have. In the age of 'ancient music', some composers featured the contrabass, or exactly, the violone as solo instrument. But after that, major composers did not write the works for contrabass
as a 'principale'. Of course there was some exception to that. I can name Dittersdorf as the exception. He wrote the concertante for viola and contrabass(Prince Hiro of Japan once played the viola principale of this concertante). He also wrote the contrabass concerto. And it is said that Haydn wrote the contrabass concerto, but that the score was lost.
In the 20th century some major composers uses the contrabass as solo instrument again. Among them I remember the 'Sonata' of Paul Hindemith.

Major composers have not written the solo works of the contrabass for a long time. But there were some 'minor composers', or the virtuosi of contrabass who composed the concerto, sonata, etc. for themselves.
As Beethoven's contemporary there was Domenico Dragonetti. And Giovanni Bottesini was the contemporary of Viotti. Sergei Koussevitzky is known as one of the 20th century's most famous basist. He was also known as a composer of the contrabass concerto and other 3 works featured the contrabass.(And You should know him better as the conductor of Boston Symphony Orchestra, of course.)
They performed for contrabass the service that Paganini or Kreisler did for the violin. I can't remember exactly, how many works Dragonetti or Bottesini composed. But those are, with the works of Koussevitzky, the major repertoire for us. And bass musics of Koussevitzky are all published. I recommend those as your solo repertoire. I think they are like some Etudes or other works of Chopin for pianists.

Works for other instruments arranged for contrabass

Larger number of works for violoncello are arranged for contrabass and published than those for other instruments. 'Works for violoncello' include some concertos, sonatas, and many encore pieces. 'Swan' from 'Animal's Carnival'(Saint-Saens),and the Suite for violoncello(J.S.Bach) were arranged for contrabass and they now become the main repertoire for the solo bassists.
Some of them were arranged for violoncello from other instruments, for example, violin, basson, and so on. As an example I remember 'Moses-phantasy' of Paganini, and the Sonata for 'Arpeggione' of Schubert.
