BBS In Malaysia
Introduction
BBS (Bulletin Board System) is a computing facility that allows individuals
to use a PC and modem to interact with each others by connecting to a host
computer operated by a system operator (Sysop in short).
Generally, the availability of BBS is still limited in Malaysia.
Most Malaysian still aren't aware of this networked computing facility.
There is lacking of large scale commercial BBS in existence. No mass media
support and promotion activities. Most BBSes are located in Kuala Lumpur
and Petaling Jaya and making access from other part of the country
impractical. I have however listed some popular ones in the following
sections.
BBS Activities
Normally BBSer in Malaysia will connect up to the BBS to discuss topics
they are interested in (just like Internet Newgroups).
Local interest includes at least the following discussion groups:
- Special Interest User Group
- Internet
- PC & Hardware
- Windows/OS2/DOS
- Programming
- Database
- Networking
- Share Files
- Computer Games
- Multimedia
- Trade & Inquiry (Buy & Sell)
- Science & Technology
- Hot Topics Around the Country
- Sports
There are also huge file libraries (freeware, shareware, games,
programming stuff, document, GIF pictures...) available for download.
For computer gamers, this is a heaven where shareware games, cheat, hint and
patch can be found. This is also a place where a gamer can look for partner
to play multiplayer games online with modem. BBS Door games are available on
most BBS.
For bigger multi-lines BBS, online-chat or conferencing room will be provided
for users to interact online with each others.
It is generally safe for kids to get connected as Malaysian BBSers are very
well behaved. Unlike most BBS in USA, No adult material ever allowed by the
Sysop to attract subscribers.
Connection Beyond
Some BBSes are connected worldwide via FidoNet, DMLiNKS and WorldNet.
Therefore, a user will be able to interact with someone in Europe by
just accessing their favourite BBS. There is no indication that the BBSes
will have the full connection with internet. Services like Telnet connection
from internet are hardly found.
UserGat
The beauty of Malaysian BBSers is that there will be occasion gathering
where sysops, co-sysop and members will meet to have fun, food
and sharing of computing and common experience.
It is also a good opportunity for one to get to know their BBS board's
sysop, checking any technical issue on connection, etc...
As in other country, the gathering is dominated by male.
How to get Connected
- A PC with Modem and ANSI terminal emulation software.
- The simplest way is via Windows 3.1 Terminal or Windows95 HyperTerminal.
- The standard setting: 8 databit, No parity, 1 stop bit, ANSI Terminal.
- Dial the BBS modem line.
- Once connected, register your personal details.
- Normally, BBS will expect you to write a resume about yourself
before you are given full access. Take this opportunity to make a
self-introduction. Friendly existing members will welcome you.
- The Main Menu will be presented.
- Enjoy you BBS!
Software Required
You might need to get the following supporting software as a complete solution:
- ANSI Terminal Emulation Software,
preferably with ZModem protocol download capabilities.
Wildcat Navigator, is another popular HTML aware BBS browser software
you may download from the internet or any BBS around.
Recommendation: Win95 HyperTerminal, Cardon Copy and Norton PC
ANywhere.
- Offline Mail Reader for reading/replying/writing mails offline, saving
online phone bills.
Recommendation: Bluewave or any QWK Mail Packet Reader.
These software often available as shareware and easily downloadable
from the Internet and BBS.
The Cost
To get yourself connected, normally you need to pay for:
- BBS Charges: Most BBS charge for their services. The price
varies from about RM10 to RM150 a year. Most cases, a trial/guest account
is provided for evaluation purposes. Some part time BBSes provides
free access. Please refer to the logon screens for their charges.
- Telekom Bill: This is as per the normal telephone charge. Depend on
location and duration you call.
