Filipino or
Filipino-American?

Since I have your attention, there's something I'd like to point out. You may or may not have noticed how I refer to myself as being "Filipino-American" instead of just "Filipino". No, I'm not half Caucasian or puti as we brown people call our white American friends. (Keep calm people...it's not a racial slur.) Just as much as there are differences between the Irish and Irish-Americans, so too between Filipinos and Filipinos-Americans.

Many young Filipino-Americans on the Internet don't seem to realize that they are Americans, not just Filipino. They automatically assume the label of "Filipino" even though they can barely speak their "native" language. They probably know more about freakin' Paul Revere than Ramon Magsaysay.

Please don't mistake me for one of those hypocrite "anti-Filipino Filipinos". I'm just proud to be a Filipino-American. My ethnic roots may come from an archipelago on the other side of the world, but I was born and raised in the United States of America. I'm not suggesting that we Filipino-Americans should forget about our wonderful Pinoy heritage, but that we should acknowledge the beautiful country we call our home.
