Alphabetical Index of Chinese Surnames

The Chinese Surnames appear in the Pinyin transliteration with numerical tones. They are also shown in the spellings that have been adapted as the form of names in countries that use the Roman alphabet. Note that names were often transliterated depending on the dialect of the Chinese speaker as well as the customs of the host country. Until recently, most overseas Chinese originated from Southern dialect areas with transliterations greatly at variance with the Northern dialect, on which Pinyin is based. Also, in countries such as the United States, people sometimes used "Paper Names", often not even based on their own surname. In addition, owing the the fact that the Chinese place their surname first and given name last, some people go by a last name that was originally their own or an ancestor's given name.
