My iterest in the Chinese and their names was piqued when I wrote a story containing a Chinese girl during the Opium Wars. Naturally, I found I knew very little about such a subject. Until chancing upon this site, I had found very little books on Chinese, their namess, and history available to me. I enjoyed your site and like many others I am researching my family. In 1848 'WILLIAM LONG' came to Australia on board the NIMROD as 'Indentured Labour' along with 120 other Chinese Emmigrants. The NIMROD left Amoy 7 July 1848 and went to Ascension Island (Asuncion Island)for water on 30 August 1848 and arrived in Sydney Australia on 2 October 1848. William Long married an Irish woman on 10 November 1857 in Sydney and had a Son William Timothy Long in 1858. William was employed as a Cooper in Sydney. In 1860 William and Margaret Long and son lived in Maitland NSW and had a daughter Mary on 6 April 1860. William Long was then employed as a Cook. Another daughter Susan was born about 1864. William Long became an Australian Citizen on 8 August 1881 and was a Store Keeper and owned property after 32 years in Australia. He then lived in Murrurundi NSW. William Long died 3 October 1903 after 55 years in NSW and he was 83 years old. His wife Margaret died in 1919 both are buried in Murrurundi. I have been able to trace some records of the two daughters, Mary (Brookes) and Susan (Hoy) but no details about the son William Timothy Long although he was alive in 1919 when his mother died as he was about 59 years old. If anybody could help me with any information about William Long from Amoy in China or his family in Australia it would be very much appreciated. I am not sure if 'LONG' would be William's Chinese name or not and as far as I know there are no documents available with his name or signature except his application for Naturalisation where he signed W Long. My father surname is Ang. He died when my mother was 2 months pregnant carrying me. At age 8 - 10, I vividly remembered I've an Uncle who was a seaman and had 2 sons named Peter & Paul Ang. My mother still upset about the past, will not want to talk ab ut it. I hope if anyone with the same surname, perhaps, we can make a link. My mother, later remarried to my step-father, surnamed Boey. He was originally from Penang and came to Singapore in the early 1930. My recollection he told me was he used to s rve in the New Zealand armed forces in Penang when he was a young lad. Our first son's name is Victor Duan (upright) Yi (justice). At the end of June, I am due of our second child and we are having great difficulties finding a nice Chinese name with a powerful meaning. We want to keep 'Yi' for both a girl and a boy. For the irl we dislike meanings with regard to flowers/beauty/elegance etc. In case of a boy, we are charmed by names beginning with a B or a D, but that is not mandatory. Choosy, aren't we?! Is there someone who has some suggestions for us?? Thank you so very mu h!

My maternal Catonese grandfather was Ng M Poon, gravestone says N.M.Poon, his wife was Lim Shee. They settled in San Antonio, TX where they had 4 daughters & 3 sons. Their oldest daughter was the 1st Chinese born in a hospital in Texas. Their youngest s n Wm. Ng was a Flying Tiger who died, shot down flying the Hump. There's suppose to be a relation to Grandfather in Mexico. My father immigrated from N.Borneo/Maylasia. His parents were Soo Chik Heun & Sang Swee Keong. My mothers memory is fading, tho' s e says we are of the 5 Ng variety. Trying to trace the Ng's & Soo's. Have noticed that there are more Korean people named Soo but that there are few Cantonese w/this name. Can anyone shed any light/leads on relatives?

I'm interested in hearing from anyone searching the surname Wong or Wong Hee. My GGGrandfather William Wong Hee was born in Hong Kong China in approximately 1849. We do not know when he arrived in Australia, but he married Sarah Reeves at Sandhurst (Vict ria) in 1868, and was a Gardener in the Banyeena (Vic) area for many years after that. Seven of his nine children died of TB before the age of 25, and we only know of 2 daughters who lived longer, although we don't know what became of them.

I am doing research to find information about my family genealogy and history. My grandfather Owyang Man Yet came to America in 1882, from Dai Leung village, Heung Shan district (now known as Zhongsha), Kwantung (now known as Guanduong)Province, China. H married my grandmother, a member of the Law Yuck Ping from Courtland, California. She had four brothers and two sisters. My grandfather and grandmother raised seven children, three boys and four girls. One of them was my father. They grew up in Ryde, Walnut Grove, Locke area of the Delta farming country. My grandfather took his family back to China in 1920, and returned in 1922. Two of the children stayed in China along their mother until the Japanese invasion around 1937. My grandmother Law Jook Y e remained until she passed away at Dai Leung village, China, in 1961. My grandfather farmed in Vorden, on Grand Island, and worked on the Sol Runyon Ranch and the George McCullough Ranch. He, like other Chinese farm workers worked from Isleton in the W st to Hood in the East along the Sacramento River. If names like Yuk Kee Owyang, Mary Law-Wong, Bo Jung Owyang, Marie Wong, Jane Wong, Ernest Wong, or David Nam Wong, sound familiar, we are on the right track. My great-aunt Gertrude Hodgeman/Hodgman supposedly went to China around 1920 and organized their nursing system. According to family history, she was given an award that was (supposedly) only surpassed by the award given to Chiang Kai-sheik. She was give this award as a thank you for her work in organizing their nursing profession. Does anyone have any idea how I can prove or disprove this family belief?
