Surname Cen2 orginated during the Zhou Dynasty.
Variations include Sam, Sum, Shum, Tsen and Gim.
The Zhou people were considered the first nomadic war-like barbarians to invade china. They were from Northwest China. Their confederation of tribes roamed between Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces of North China Proper. Zhou Qu was given an area known as Cen Ting (currently known as city of Han District in southern Shanxi province) from the Zhou Dynasty Emperor. Zhou Qu was addressed as Cen Zi. His descendents were surnamed Cen. As time passed, the Cen families and men moved at various times and directions. Future generations of Cen families like other families settled in various areas such as: Shaanxi; Henan; Beijing; Shandong; Xingjiang; Sichuan; Yunnan; Guangxi; Guangdong; Jiangxi; Hong Kong; Taiwan; USA and other countries. As the Cen families and men migrated their decendents intermarried with various different groups. Today, the Zhou Dynasty people like other groups make up the Han Chinese people.
