Grey.
Over 600 pages worth of post-apocalyptic action and examinations of the society.
Yoshihisa Tagami's masterpiece.
Also an anime movie.
A story set in the future, after WW III. A man called Grey (a.k.a. Grey Death) is a one of the many troopers from town 303. The troopers have been regular living-in-poverty people who have decided to pursuit the citicenship, which is supposed to give you access to better life, get you away from the slums and to The City.
But this can only be achieved by joining the troopers and going to the battles against troopers from other towns. You start from class F trooper, and by killing enough enemies, you get promoted to class E, D, C, B and finally to class A: to citicenship.
This is not going to be easy, and you have 50 percent chance that you'll be killed before you even reach class E.
Sadly I have no information about the Japanese original, but here's what I know about the translations.Grey has been translated to English twice: once in late eighties (about 1989) and once in 1997, on both times by Viz in two volumes. 3rd language versions also exist. (Well, atleast there is an Italian version).

Grey emerged as a 80-minute movie in 1987 produced by Tokuma Shoten. The film was directed by Tetsu Dezaki; screenplay was written by Yasushi Hirano, Kazumi Koide and Tetsu Dezaki; and the music was composed by Goro Ohmi.
Grey was released in the UK by Western Connection in 1994 (subbed), and with the name 'Grey Digital Target' by Viz Video in 1997.The anime version differs only slightly from manga, having a bit more optimistic (or pessimistic, depending your point of view) ending. Despite being made nearly a decade ago, 'Grey Digital Target' doesn't show much signs of aging, animation being very crisp and generally well done.
The cover of the Western Connection tape looks something like this.
