The Story

Tonde Buurin is the story of a girl named Kokubu Karin. She is your usual magical girl (Chao Shoujo) junior high school student that is incredibly cheerful, friendly, and of course, a klutz.

On the first day of school a starving Karin saved a yellow piglet who later got her into a whole mess of thing. This piglet, Ton-chan, is actually the prince of Planet Buuringo, and had come from far away in the universe. He gave Karin a magical pig-head-shaped compact that along with the appropriate magical words ("Ba Bi Bu Be Buurin!"), will transform her into the superheroine Buurin...

However, things then take a big turn away from the pack. Instead of an older version of herself, or some fantastically costumed heroine, Karin turns into Buurin, a fat pink flying pig! It is Buurin's mission to fly around saving people, a la Superman. Not only does Karin get her compact, Ton-chan also gives her a seashell that dispenses pearls. After each good deed she does, Karin will receive some pearls. When she manages to collect 108 of these, she will be able to transform out of her pig-girl form, and into any other magical girl form she wants. This part of the deal Karin likes, and she works hard to help people out so she can eventually be a super-cute chao shoujo like those she sees on TV.

The show also deals a lot with Karin's friends and her school-life. Together they cause a lot of mischief, it's really a lot of fun!

The storyline, characters, and atmosphere of Tonde Buurin is a little bit different from the other animes we have been seeing. This series is much less serious than the others, dealing mostly with the everyday lives of the characters, and most of Buurin's missions are more down-to-earth than some of the more famous anime series. For example it does not have much fighting scenes until towards the last five episodes, when her missions become very serious.

"Sounds good. How can I get to see it?"

I knew you would like it, right?

You may be able to see Tonde Buurin through your local TV station. If not, this feature tells you how to get ahold of at least some part of it.

The Series

The full name of Tonde Buurin is "Ai to Yuuki no Pig Girl Tonde Buurin." It is originally a magical girl-type comic series (manga) by Ikeda Taeko running in the Japanese magazine "Ciao". In 1994 it was made into an animated series by Nippon Animation, and was aired in Japan. It has a total of 51 episodes. The series aired in Japan from September 3, 1994 to August 26, 1995, Saturdays at 6pm, on the TBS network in Japan.

The OP and ED songs, Ai wa Kakkowarui and Buurin a la mode respectively, are both performed by the group Parquets. The people at Capital Artists (A record company with close ties to TVB) produced a Cantonese version of the OP song, with the identical music. More details on that is available from the Chinese version of this page.

Various TV stations have purchased this series for broadcasting in their region. Check the new dubs supplement for more information.

The information on this page is based mostly on the Cantonese dub, which fortunately is quite loyal to the original.
