MALACCA

Malacca has become a bit of a backwater considering its colorful history but lately seems to be re-dynamizing thanks to influx of industry and tourism. This time capsule city was a major centre of the spice trade and received early visits from India, Arabia, China. This brought about invasions by Portugese,British and Dutch. All left influence behind: buildings, culture, people. Interesting communities are Babas (descendants of early Chinese) who blended Malay/Chinese culture and small group of Portugese descendants who miraculously kept alive language while cut off via religion. Recently, Malacca was scene of Malaysian independence declaration .
