MOZAMBIQUE
Mozambique is a vast country with much untapped potential due to the prolonged violence. The visit was short but was my first to a developing "Popular Republic". The country is trying to re-build after the recent truce between rebels and government. The people are very poor even compared to neighboring Swaziland. Maputo, the capital has the feel of an erstwhile Lisbon in the tropics; it now crawls with Aid missionaries of every stripe. Most important streets have revolutionary heroes' names. i.e. Lenin Ave.. Nearby is the island of Inhaca with some coral reefs.
Before going to Mozambique I was warned about unexploded mines, armed bandits, army abuse of tourists. Fortunately, the only misadventure was a pair of stolen sandals.
