Welcome
This a Daruma. Darumas are part of Japanese Folk Culture. As my page develops I will place links to other pages devoted to Darumas.
The Daruma symbolizes resilience. Because of the shape the figure bounces back when pushed down. Daruma is connected to the saying seven times down\ eight times up. Daruma's are often displayed in sets of eight.Darumas are connected to Zen Buddhism. Horin-ji in Kyoto is devoted to the Daruma as he appears in popular culture.
This is a photo of the Daruma as he appears in the garden. of Darumadera (Horin-ji in Kyoto). It was taken in the 1970's hence the faded quality.
